Melvin Guillard – Consistently or Inconsistently Good?

Posted on March 8, 2014 by Jason

With another loss, I couldn’t help but think that Melvin Guillard is one of the most inconsistent long-time fringe contenders that I can recall.  Does this mean he’s inconsistently good or consistently good?  After all, he keeps on keeping on, continually reaching a status of top-level journeyman after losing.

Using the Generated Historical Rankings as analytical fuel, it turns out that Melvin Guillard is 1 of only 10 fighters to have at least 25 quarterly rankings in the Lightweight division, with none of them in the Top 5 or below the Top 150 and an average ranking equal or better than #50.

The First “Great” Polish Heavyweight?

Posted on March 2, 2014 by Jason

On March 14, [#14] Damian Grabowski (19-1-0) will take on [#25] Marcin Tybura (9-0-0) in a battle of the top two Polish Heavyweights in professional MMA.

The winner of this match will end up fairly close to the World Top 10 and will be well on their way to becoming the best Heavyweight in history from Poland.   As strange as it seems, the winner probably becomes the best Heavyweight ever from Eastern Europe (sans Russia) behind Filipovic, Arlovski and Vovchanchyn.  Grabowski currently holds the lead over Tybura with a longer ledger, though he did start one division below — which means if he does make the big time, perhaps he will go back to 205.

UFC Fight Night 36 Recap

Posted on February 18, 2014 by Ked Becker

What happened in UFC Fight Night 36?  Did it meet our expectations and what are the consequences for the future?

I will discuss only the four fights here which I was looking forward to.

Charles Oliveira vs. Andy Ogle

Charles Oiveira was considered an exciting prospect in the featherweight division after dropping from lightweight, showing high level submission skills and decent striking to complement it.   So much so that he even got a fight against Frankie Edgar despite a loss to Cub Swanson in his previous fight.   But after two straight losses he was sent to the back of the division to show he is still worthy of being considered a potential prospect,  taking a match against Andy Ogle – a relative unknown who has lost 2 of his 3 UFC fights, and was ranked at the lowly #125 FW accordingly.

To show he should still be considered as good as his reputation, Oliveira should have demolished Ogle.  Quite frankly anything else would have been a disappointment.   And something else happened: Oliveira did look better than Ogle, but he wasn’t able to control him for extended periods of time or hurt him.  It looked like it was going to end in a not-too-impressive decision win for Oliveira when he was able to secure the triangle choke in the third round.

This was not an impressive enough performance out of Oliveira against such a mediocre fighter to prove he belongs in the top of the division yet, and the rankings reflect that, elevating him only 6 spots from FW #38 to #32.

Erick Silva vs. Takenori Sato

Like Charles Oliveira, Erick Silva too was considered an exciting prospect, being a very fast, very explosive, and flashy all-around fighter whose wins came in spectacular fashion and very quickly – until he came across the more solid wrestlers of the division, namely, Jon Fitch and Dong Hyun Kim.   Like Oliveira he was sent back in the division to face the simpler challenge of Takenori Sato, who was undefeated in his last 10 fights.

In this short fight Silva made quick work of Sato, leaving no doubt who is the better fighter.   Unfortunately, Sato didn’t show he is a worthy opponent.  The first kick Silva threw hurt him and he went for a desperate single leg when Silva drew closer, and lost through hammer-fist strikes to his head while he was holding that single, which might be the first knock out of its kind.  This performance was less indicative of Silva’s prowess than of Sato’s lack thereof.  If we can learn anything about Silva from this fight is that in spite of Sato’s incompetence he was still able to take Silva down, if only for a second, through that sloppy single he was holding for dear life.  Therefore this fight also doesn’t put Silva back in any interesting position.  This is evident in the rankings as well, awarding Silva just 3 more spots and placing him at #27 WW.

Notable Info

Japanese prospect Mizuki Inoue was “officially” awarded a DQ LOSS for submitting her opponent, Emi Tomimatsu in the 3rd round of their fight in today’s JEWELS event.  Yes, you read that correctly.  The reasoning was that since Inoue missed weight (by a pound or so), if she won the fight, it would instead be turned into a disqualification win for Tomimatsu.  Talk about backwards logic.

For the record, we will not be honoring the “official” outcome and will instead honor the actual outcome.  To the best of my knowledge, we’ve only went against the official outcome one time prior and that was for Royce Gracie’s forfeit “loss” to Harold Howard, as the fight never even started.  Sherdog acknowledged that as a loss for Royce for many years, until they finally struck that one from their records.

For the accuracy of the ratings/rankings, we forever observe the actual outcome as it happened, unless the official outcome is negated due to a violation of some kind (drug policy) or overturned due to a scoring error.  Thankfully, the actual outcome matches the official outcome, 99.99% of the time.

Gegard Mousasi – Fight Biography

Posted on February 15, 2014 by Ked Becker

Gegard Mousasi, born in Tehran to an Armenian family, grew up in the Netherlands from the age of 4.  He began his professional MMA career at 2003 at the age of 17, and fought in various organizations including M-1, Rings and DEEP at middleweight before debuting in Pride in 2006 at 20 years old.

After a win and a loss (the second one of his career at that point, both by armbars) he was matched with then #78 ranked Middleweight Hector Lombard, and showed superior grappling, controlling Lombard’s back for most of the fight.

In 2008 he beat then #68 LHW Evangelina Santos in a middleweight match to reach #23 ranking, but his jump into the spotlight was  his debut in Dream against #14 Dennis Kang, on whom he was able to slap a triangle, catapulting him to #8 in the world.  He then continued in the Dream tournament beating #20 Melvin Manhoef and #25 Ronaldo Souza on the night of September 23, 2008.   Both fights were short.  Gegard had no problem controlling Manhoef on the ground for another triangle submission win, while he got lucky against Souza sending a precise head kick just as Souza was diving in for some ground control.   It was an exciting finish but it’s not one that proved Mousasi’s superiority, so a rematch between the two today would be a very viable and interesting option.

Winning the Dream Middleweight title has made Mousasi one of the best middleweight in the world, as he rose to #3 in the Middleweight rankings.  Mousasi has shown himself to be a very well-rounded fighter, with world-championship level kickboxing and an excellent ground game which awarded him his most impressive wins to that point.

On 2009 He took on the massive challenge of Mark Hunt, who didn’t look good at the time, ranking at #31 Heavyweight after 4 fight losing streak. Mousasi controlled him on the ground, leading to an easy armbar.

He then signed a deal with StrikeForce which allowed him to continue fighting in Dream at the same time.   He beat Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral, who was the StrikeForce LHW champion and ranked #10 LHW, in less than a minute with his signature lightning fast ground & pound, reaching the pinnacle of his career by becoming the StrikeForce LHW champion and ranking at #4 at LHW.

Don’t Blame The Fighter

Posted on February 7, 2014 by Ked Becker

UFC 169 was branded “10-decision, record-breaking catastrophe”, and the usual slamming of boring fighters, safe game planning soon followed.

Every time too many fights on a card drag too long, reach a decision or overall feel like the fighters are not making enough of an effort to try and finish, accusations are directed at them for not having the required ‘killer instinct’, not caring enough about the fans, or just being too calculated and careful in their fighting style.  This is especially true regarding high profile fights, like championship bouts and main events.

I think what I’m about to say is quite obvious and is really known to everybody, but somehow I just don’t hear it enough, so I feel the need to state it out clearly:

THIS IS NOT THE FIGHTERS’ FAULTS!

You can’t blame anyone who is playing any kind of game or competing in any kind of competition for trying their best to win, and to keep on winning.  You can’t blame a basketball player for trying to score hoops, you can’t blame a football player for trying to score touchdowns, and you can’ t blame an MMA fighter for trying to win rounds, because this is the way to win fights.
