  8. Chromium August 20, 2018 at 2:56 am Reply

tomb, eventually everyone’s going to fight everyone else and that shit will sort itself out. Besides, you should have seen what people thought of Japanese fighters at 155 and lower 3-5 years ago. Five years ago they were considered the dominant force in Flyweight through Lightweight. Only 3-4 years ago they were still highly competitive at Lightweight and the dominant force at Flyweight through Featherweight, with Urijah Faber being a bit of an outlier. Now they’re the dominant force at Flyweight and even there they’ve gone from having more or less a monopoly on it to only having four of the top ten. Things will straighten themselves out. Also, at the grass roots level Japan does still produce a fair amount of talent, and they are slowly getting better at weight cutting.

  9. Matt August 20, 2018 at 1:53 am Reply

No, Charlebois, and especially Carter were at 135. Trust me, I train with Yusup, he’s a bantamweight. He just occasionally can step up to 45 like his fight with Wilson.

I will always reply thoughtfully and comprehensively when someone questions A fighter’s ranking… but when someone complains about the entirety.. all I have to say is, make your own system =).

bowles should have only been dropped one spot, two the most. He lost to faber who was rated above him and he drops 8 spots but guys like vila makovsky fernandes tokoro and banuelos and warren are all in the top 10? not to be rude, but sometimes these rankings really confuse me especially when especially fernandes hasnt beaten anybody of relevance. hansen was not that relevant when they fought. torres jorgensen bowles and johnson should be in the top 10. but tbh i should make my own rankings based on guys who beat worthy oppenents rather than guys who crush cans in japan and even in bellator, though makaovsky could be at 11 the most

A loser is not kept behind a winner for all eternity. In this case, Howell has beaten enough quality opponents to bypass both of those fighters, while those fighters haven’t done a whole lot since.

Fighters can pass other fighters that have beaten them if they have accomplished more since, or the winner has fallen off.

  35. Brad Harper August 20, 2018 at 12:13 am Reply

Chris David has never been finished. I thought that meant he had been beaten badly in one of his decision losses. But after looking into it, he actually has banged every fighter at least one of the rounds. I am interested to see how he will do in the WEC. I could see someone overlooking him. He’s an interesting guy to say the least. I went to his website. He’s been allover and has quite the inquisitive mind. No wonder he can’t be knocked out. A brain like that is must be hard to stop.

  36. Joe McDonough August 20, 2018 at 12:13 am Reply

So now you have 2 guys that Jose Vega destroyed above him in the rankings. Cody Bell and Danny Timms. Just messin around. But come on

  37. jason August 20, 2018 at 12:13 am Reply

Cody Bell was given credit for several amateur matches, Vega was missing out on a win, and Tims was being credited with an amateur win. These midwest guys are hard to keep track of. The biggest problem was that Vega’s last opponent did not have an accurate record.

Upon next update, Vega will move up to about #65

  41. jason August 19, 2018 at 9:46 pm Reply

The “low ranked” Leandro Issa? Isn’t/Wasn’t Issa ranked above Sirwan? Saenz’s win was a split decision as well.

When a consistently much lower ranked fighter wins over a consistently much higher ranked fighter, that winning fighter’s new ranking is volatile.

I love your rankings, I’ve followed them since 2007. However, I’m wondering how, statistically Frankie Saenz is ranked below Alcantara.

Obviously, after the first fight Saenz was ranked above him. However, since that fight Alcantara fought once. Defeating the low ranked Leandro Issa. Meanwhile, Saenz fought twice; defeating Sirwan Kakai and losing a tough match to high ranked Uriah Faber.

How does a win against Leandro Issa propel Iuri higher than Saenz whom should have increased the distance between him and Alcantara with his win over Kakai?
There is no way a lost to Top 5 Faber could propel him so low that Alcantara is currently 5 spots ahead of him…could it?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

*a double post since my last message was not proof-read, and my auto-correct had changed the names of the fighters to random words so you had no idea whom I was talking about lol

In Australia we have Quite a few Bantamweights that deserve to be ranked here. Aden Hawke is 4-1 (4 in a row), Ben Ngyuen, Shantaram Maharaj, all have fought in the last 6 months but are not featured? Are there other qualifing parameters other than actually winning fights in the past year??

  50. jason August 19, 2018 at 9:46 pm Reply

Not sure what you meant by: “Not sure of your point. He beat them both.”

    We have a fighter search….

It appears we have him at 7-5, not 8-4.. so there is an issue with data. We will fix and see if this resolves the problem.

EDIT: We had him as losing against Sindone, so this definitely impacted his rating.

yup = He’s finally at the right weight class after all those fights. He also just entered the list of fighters who have fought in the most weight divisions (5), though I may have to delve deeper into that, he may have fought at LHW or WW at some point.

  61. Chase Brown August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

Mike Kyle should be judged at & listed at 205.

  62. ThonolansGhost August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

I think we;ll have to wait until #300 has 24 or 25 points. That seems to be the criteria.

  63. Chromium August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

The way the rankings work is with rare exceptions, people are judged on the last weight class they fought in. Mike Kyle’s last fight was at HW. When he goes back down to LHW, he will be moved to LHW again and his score will be adjusted a bit to account for the weight difference.

Exceptions are granted for situations such as Matt Lindland going up from MW to HW only to accomplish nothing (nor lose any points) when he got submitted by Fedor.

Lindland was not a natural HW by any stretch and weighed in at 206 to just barely make it an official HW match. Kyle, on the other hand, fought 19 fights as a HW before dropping down… and since doing so, has fought another 4 fights at HW in between 5 fights at LHW. Not all of his recent HW fights were late replacement losses to elite HWs in SF either. There is no reason to grant him an exception.

  64. Chromium August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

Um, I’m a little confused how Takafumi Otsuka managed to land the #11 spot. I just don’t see it in his resume. Are you sure there wasn’t any error there?

  65. jason August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

Tokoro’s rating is more established and lost a split. Bowles was coming off a loss to Cruz, year of inactivity, win over relatively poor opposition (Page), good win over Mizugaki, but got KO’d. That’s one quality performance since fall 2009 — over 2 years. The rating you see are primary ratings, there are other metrics we utilize. If you don’t like the site, don’t bother visiting. The only way in which you can reference direct head-to-head results in this system is if the fight was both fighters’ most recent fight, otherwise, it can’t be the major portion of your argument.

  71. E. Bobonis August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

Shah Bobonis moved down to 135 Lbs. and has won his last 6 fights. He now has a record of 14-6. He had and impressive KO win over Marcos da Matta, also known as “Parrumpinha” or “Parrumpa”, one of the top jiu-jitsu super featherweights in the 2000’s. This Carlson Gracie black belt would join the American Top Team at a later stage and become one of it’s most prestigious coaches while also leading a successful career in MMA. Most recently Bobonis got another win against veteran and black belt Aaron “Yoda” Williams from the camp of UFC veteran Alan Belcher in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Bobonis has called out some top Bantamweights including Chase Bebee with no luck. He recently sign a contract with XFC US south east largest independent promotion. I think he should be rank as a bantamweight.

  72. TLC August 19, 2018 at 8:22 pm Reply

Consistent, fair? The ranking system is an abomination at this point.

So let me get this straight, Bowles drops an immense 8 spots, and over 30 points for losing to Faber who’s ranked 3. But Tokoro barely drops losing to Antonio ****ing Banuelos? Who btw skyrockets all the way up to 8 to outrank a guy in Torres who has just crushed him a fight prior. AWESOME.

    @jcs: Eh, fair enough.
@George Lucas: have you looked at Chad Robichaux’s record? Or more specifically the record of his opponents? Robichaux may be 11-1, but his first 9 opponents had a combined 3-6 record at the time they faced him. 7 have never had a win in their career before or after Robichaux. He is an utter can crusher. I’m not surprised that he does not compute to one of the top 150 BWs in the world.

Looking back, Banhuevos literally had 66 points before beating Tokoro, yet Tokoro losing had around the same, possibly even smaller effect of losing to Banhuevos than Bowles did to Faber. Nice.

It’s a combination of a couple of factors, all stemming from the fact that he’s a Japan-only fighter that was fortunate to fight Otsuka when he was ranked highly… so it’s like what we saw with Cobb to the next level.

It’s a known fact that Japanese fighters solely fighting within their own population tend to be 15% overrated on average — those who fight more, may be even higher.. beyond 20% even. We see this when they finally do fight outside the pop. The only problem is that there’s no real good way to maintain this on an ongoing basis. We run that population adjustment once a year, but maybe it needs to be run more frequently. At the start of the year, everything seems kosher.. but it appears as the year comes to an end, it starts to present itself once more.

I am definitely seconding the motion on expanding the BW’s. With the WEC and Bellator paying a lot of attention to them, as well as the Japanese promotions already doing a lot to highlight them, the BW’s are definitely deep enough to be ranked 150 or more.

  104. Maryvale152 December 23, 2015 at 5:19 am Reply

His best win is Chico Camus, who is #76, and Davey Grant, who is #128, and he doesn’t seem to have fought higher than Featherweight (I could be wrong), or fought anyone notable on the indies. Were his Ultimate Fighter house wins counted or something?

We’re starting to see it in the women now too. Before, it was just prevalent in the men… but the women are starting to pull away.

I thought we had a handle on it, but it seems to be getting even worse. This is definitely a top priority issue for 2013.

Definitely beyond 20%. We’ve seen the proof many, many times whenever these guys start fighting in the UFC. Not just the Japanese fighters, but the majority of fighters who makes a name for themselves fighting mostly in Japan.

Um, I’m aware of how Fight Matrix ranks but I still can’t for the life of me figure out how Maeda landed so high. None of his recent wins warrant him being anywhere near the top 10. Are you sure this isn’t a mistake?

Also a lot of the BW rankings seem like there was simply some sort of glitch in the system. I normally defend Fight Matrix as by far the best computerized rankings but I’m pretty vexed by the BW rankings here.

Looking back, Banhuevos literally had 66 points before beating Tokoro, yet Tokoro losing had around the same, possibly even smaller effect of losing to Banhuevos than Bowles did to Faber. Nice.

AWESOME.

I see no issue with the current ranking of Bowles, given the positions of Torres, Mizugaki, and his recent performance against Faber. If you want to argue that Banuelos and Tokoro are too high, than that is something entirely different. Warren and Fernandes are comparable situations as they recently moved downward in division. These rankings aren’t division-specific.. fighters take their points with them when they move divisions. If you want to make your own rankings, please feel free — the Internet is large enough for the both of us. BTW, you are aware that software generates these rankings right? The software isn’t perfect, but it’s consistent and fair.

bowles should have only been dropped one spot, two the most. He lost to faber who was rated above him and he drops 8 spots but guys like vila makovsky fernandes tokoro and banuelos and warren are all in the top 10? not to be rude, but sometimes these rankings really confuse me especially when especially fernandes hasnt beaten anybody of relevance. hansen was not that relevant when they fought. torres jorgensen bowles and johnson should be in the top 10. but tbh i should make my own rankings based on guys who beat worthy oppenents rather than guys who crush cans in japan and even in bellator, though makaovsky could be at 11 the most

tomb, eventually everyone’s going to fight everyone else and that shit will sort itself out.

  278. tomb June 2, 2011 at 12:54 pm Reply

I think you give to much weight to these japanese fighters . though i know that japan carried mma for years. none of these fighters except for okami i cant think of any that has been able to carry the load against ufc/strikeforce fighters aoki got destroyed by melendez and sexiyama has lost his last two.

This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Learn how your comment data is processed.

Before asking where a specific fighter is ranked or why they aren't ranked:

- We update the rankings once per week, usually on Sunday or Monday.

- Fighters who have not fought in 450 days or more ARE NOT RANKED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

- Use the "Fighter Search" option in the upper-right of the page. The fighter may be ranked in a different division.

- Most of the divisions have multiple pages beyond this one. See the clickable ranges above and below the ranking table.

Furthermore, we do not maintain the "next fight" data. This is gathered from Sherdog. Any issues regarding this data should be forwarded to them.
