Fight Matrix

New Ranking Features

Posted on March 9, 2012 by Oleg

Introducing a couple of new enhancements to our ranking pages:

The most recent opponent’s name and current ranking (where available) is now listed for each ranked fighter.

Also, you can now filter our rankings by the Next Fight organization, including all fighters with a scheduled fight.

For example, here are all the ranked heavyweights scheduled to make their UFC debut in the next fight.

Or, all ranked American lightweights with a scheduled bout.

Thanks to Richard Wade of Bloody Elbow for the suggestion.

More cool stuff coming in near future!

Prepare for Flyweight Craziness

Posted on February 26, 2012 by Jason

Forever the Japanese recluse division of men’s MMA, the UFC has decided to open the Flyweight division up to the world.  This will likely result in many top Bantamweights moving down into the Flyweight division and the exodus begins this Friday.

The above graphical representation portrays the issue that will soon be confronting the FightMatrix Flyweight rankings.  As Bantamweight is a much, much more established division, contending Bantamweights are already so much more proven than even the very top Flyweights that they will hold a distinct rating advantage.

Barring any weight cut issues and/or anomalous performances, based on the point level differences, Demetrious Johnson SHOULD easily beat Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez SHOULD trounce Yasuhiro Urushitani.  In fact, Benavidez holds such an incredibly high Bantamweight rating, if he should win this Friday, he will likely have more than triple the rating points of any other Flyweight — outside of Johnson, who himself will be an amazing strongly #2 Flyweight, should he win this Friday.

As you may, or may not know, our ratings are division-adjusted, not division-specific.  In this case, that’s not really up for debate, as Johnson and Benavidez will be taking on the #1 and #3 Flyweights, respectively.  Should they win, they will deserve to be ranked #1 and #2, but with an incredible amount of rating points in comparison to the rest of the division.

Gambling Analysis: UFC on Fuel TV 1

Posted on February 11, 2012 by Jason

If you’re keeping count at home, I’m on a roll with our “gambling analysis” posts, picking 6-for-6 winners (1 other ending in a ‘no contest’) with near perfection on the outcome type and round.

In my honest opinion, the upcoming UFC: Fuel TV 1 card doesn’t provide many solid betting options and I feel like I’m forcing a pick this week.  Overall, the matches are well constructed and this will usually lead to some unexpected outcomes.

Having said that, betting on MMA at TopBet can currently yield you odds of  -140 with a pick of Dave Herman over Stefan Struve at the upcoming Fuel TV event.  Though they are very closely ranked here at FightMatrix (Herman #24 / Struve #28), I think Struve is too big of a target and has too weak of a chin to stay standing.  15 of Herman’s 22 wins have come by (T)KO, and he should improve this rate with a late first round stoppage of Struve.

FightMatrix Q&A with #11 Lightweight Brian Cobb

Posted on January 25, 2012 by Jason

You may have seen this week’s post regarding Brian Cobb and his fight on Friday.  If you haven’t, click here.  Furthermore, if you’ve been here a while, you’ve likely noticed his name being ranked toward the top of the Lightweight division — something you won’t see on other ranking sites.

Friday will do a whole bunch to determine whether or not that ranking is complete legit or even in the ballpark.  We got a hold of Brian to ask him a few questions regarding FightMatrix and his fight on Friday.

FM: There are a lot of MMA ranking sites out there, though the FightMatrix system has been giving you the most praise over the past year or so, consistently ranking you right outside the Top 10.  Do you follow your rank on our site and do you consider this an accurate ranking for yourself in the Lightweight division?

Cobb: I definitely follow the FightMatrix rankings. It is the only ranking website that I have bookmarked on my computer. I firmly believe rankings don’t help you win fights, that is why they have the fighters actually fight, but it is really nice to get so much respect from FightMatrix for my past few wins. I think their rankings are accurate because I feel like I can hang with anyone in the world for three to five rounds. It seems that people who do not consider me worthy of being in the top 10 do not acknowledge the people I have fought or believe it is unjustified because I am not currently in the UFC

“Keep an Eye Out For…” UPDATE: Daniel Pineda

Posted on January 19, 2012 by Jonathan

On 9/19/11, I wrote this “Keep an Eye Out For…” article:

“[#35FW] Daniel Pineda (14 – 7 – 0) has rattled off 4 stoppage wins, after losing via kneebar to [*] Chas Skelly (7 – 0 – 0) at Bellator 19 in May 2010.  These wins include

  • 1st round rear naked choke on lightweight [*] Reynaldo Trujillo (8 – 7 – 0) in July 2010
  • 1st round heel hook on lightweight prospect [#332LW] Levi Forrest (6 – 1 – 0) in January 2011
  • KO in under 1:00 of the 1st round over lightweight [*] Ray Blodgett (5 – 1 – 0) in April 2011
  • 3rd round rear naked choke on WEC veteran [#141FW] Frank Gomez (10 – 4 – 0) in July 2011.

Pineda has won every one of his victories via stoppage, and he has only gone to a decision once in his career.  These aren’t 0-1 fighters he is beating, they are legit prospects and tough veterans.  At 26 years old, the Houston, Texas native has a lot of time to hone his skills and make it to the big show.”

Pineda is now ranked [#40FW] and sports a (15 – 7 – 0) record with a 5th stoppage win in a row in December 2011 over featherweight [*] Gilbert Jiminez (5 – 4 – 1).  He will be making his UFC debut this friday at UFC on FX 1 against undefeated St. Paul, Minnesota fighter [#227FW] Pat Schilling (5 – 0 – 0).  Pineda has the edge in experience, but Schilling is a finisher.  In fact, 4 of Schilling’s 5 wins come by way of submission, while Pineda has lost 6 times by submission.  With both of these guys being relatively unknown to the general UFC audience at this point, this could be either fighter’s coming out party.

Gambling Analysis – UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller

Posted on January 17, 2012 by Jason

When gambling on an MMA fight, it is essential to keep tabs on the betting odds for MMA.  Anything can happen in such a volatile sport, but knowing who the consistent fighters are, as well as when the available odds understate their chance of winning will maximize your chances of earning money.

We’ve had a bit of a break from these gambling articles, but all four previous posts were 100% accurate in predicting the victor and extremely close in the type of victory.  Taking a look at the upcoming main event on Friday, Jim Miller vs. Melvin Guillard, in this author’s opinion, is a moderately good bet.

Jim Miller is one of the most consistent fighters in the UFC Lightweight division.  In all three fights he’s lost, he’s lost by decision, and in two of those losses, he’s lost to elite fighters within the division — with the jury still being out on Ben Henderson.  Not only this, but he’s fought nearly his entire career in the same division, another mark of consistency.  Guillard, has not been the mark of consistency, which can also make him a risky play.  The current betting line on Miller is -213, which means you get a return of $100 for every $213 you bet on Miller.  Without compensating for “the juice”, this line suggests Miller has a 68% chance of winning.  I’d put Miller’s odds of winning closer to 75% and therefore, I think he is a good play for a moderate bet to win.  I’ll take him by 2nd round submission.

Russian Prospect Nurmagomedov, biting off more than he can chew?

Posted on January 16, 2012 by Jason

[#151 WW] Habib Nurmagomedov (16-0) will be accomplishing many firsts on Friday.  Not only is he debuting in the UFC, but it is also his first fight outside of Russia and Ukraine.  Furthermore, he’s dropping to Lightweight for the first time according to our records.  He’s also never faced an opponent as legit as [#53] Kamal Shalrous (7-1-2), whose record is much better than Nurmagomedov’s average opponent — roughly 4-2, and let’s not even discuss THEIR collective opposition.

Will the Russian prospect start his career at 17-0?  How about 17 wins without a split or majority decision?  Or will he also walk away with his first loss?
