Jon Fitch to tie Royce Gracie’s record

Posted on February 26, 2008 by Oleg

Should he defeat his opponent Chris Wilson in their upcoming UFC 82 bout, Jon Fitch will become only the second fighter in the UFC history to achieve eight consecutive victories in the Octagon.  But not without some controversy:

Royce Gracie holds the current record for most consecutive wins in the UFC.  Gracie accomplished his eight victories over the course of the first three UFC tournaments.  After defeating Kimo Leopoldo in the opening round of the UFC 3 tournament, Royce was not able to continue fighting.  Instead of withdrawing from the tournament between bouts, Gracie entered the Octagon to face Harold Howard in the semi-final — only to have his corner throw in the towel as soon as the bout began.

MMA pundits disagree on whether to count “the fight that wasn’t” as a loss on Gracie’s record.  Sherdog.com lists it as a loss; so does UFC.com.  FCFighter.com shows this bout as a No Contest.  UFC lore has it that Royce chose to enter the Octagon and throw in the towel instead of quitting between bouts so that he would receive the “show money” for the second fight.  Had he skipped that fight completely, he would have extended his streak to eleven consecutive wins following his performance in the UFC 4 tournament – a record not likely to be disputed for a long time to come.

But wait, there’s more!  It turns out there is another fighter who can make a claim to already have matched Royce Gracie’s record.  Keep Reading

Rating Set #9 to be released 2/25/08

Posted on February 24, 2008 by Jason

Ratings to be updated with the following considerations:

– Takanori Gomi has entered the inactive penalty stage several days ago, and will be dropped from the Lightweight rankings due to over 365 days of inactivity. Gesias Calvancanti will be the new #1 ranked Lightweight.

– Results of recent cards from Shooto, HDNet, DEEP, and others, will be reflected.

– Minor maintenance was performed with regards to fighter divisions. Some fighters will receive their accurate division assignment per the guidelines of the system. This is simply a maturation process of the system.

– Through my independent research, I have verified that fights taking place during the Ultimate Fighter: Season 2, were in fact, officially sanctioned pro bouts. Other than the finals, this is the only season where this is the case. As such, they will be added to the rating system database. This was confirmed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission web site.

– Other minor bouts in past years have been added to the MMA database.

It is needless to say, that all of these points will cause some moderate shuffling within the rankings.

Official Set #8 Released

Posted on February 21, 2008 by Jason

Ratings as of February 21, 2008

– This is just a maintenance release.  Bouts were added from various times in MMA history.

– Implemented methods to incorporate professional bouts that are not on the Sherdog database.  This will be handled on a case-by-case basis in instances where results can be verified through an independent source.  We still rely 99.9% on Sherdog’s database.

Remember, if you want to view archived rankings, you can do so through the ‘Historical Rankings’ link within the ‘MMA Rankings’ dropdown.  We archive the first ranking sets in each calendar month.  Also, if you wish to comment on this release, or any other topic, please do so in the forums.

Talk about never say die….

Posted on February 20, 2008 by Jason

A recent question from a BoxRec forum poster put me on the hunt to find out which boxer had the largest amount of consecutive losses before winning a bout.

Believe it or not, a boxer named Frankie Hines lost 51 consecutive bouts before winning again.  The streak spanned over 7 years (Dec 1993 – Mar 2001).   He won twice more after this, and retired with a record of 17-120-5.  Boxers, Frank Wuestenberghs, and Arv Mittoo, receive the silver and bronze, with streaks of 49, and 46, respectively.

Official Set #7 Released!

Posted on February 17, 2008 by Jason

Ratings released on Feb 17, 2008 with the following considerations:

– SmackGirl, EliteXC, and other minor shows have results which affect primarily the Heavyweight and Women’s division.

– Version 1.03 of the rating system is launched.  The latest update has very minor changes.

– Top 60 rankings have been expanded to Top 75!!

Minor bugfix in next ratings release.

Posted on February 15, 2008 by Jason

Version 1.03

– Prevented excessive credit for opposition quality in cases of blow-out losses to much higher opposition.

– Corrected possible bug with regards to fighters losing beyond expected maximum points if recent opposition is extremely poor.

These changes will be present in set #7, which should be released on Sunday, Feb 17.  These changes will have very minor effects on the rankings.

WEC Review

Posted on February 14, 2008 by Oleg

On February 13th, World Extreme Cagefighting made its debut in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Three titles were up for grabs as WEC’s welterweight, lightweight, and bantamweight champions all put their belts on the line.  It so turned out that two of them walked away empty handed from this night of mostly great fights.
