For those of you that don’t know, we maintain an All-Time Ranking which is usually updated in the first week of every month.
Recently, Anderson Silva took the #1 Absolute ranking from Fedor Emelianenko. If recent trends continue, Georges St. Pierre should take over the #2 spot, pushing Fedor down to #3. GSP recently secured the #1 Welterweight position from Matt Hughes and will likely lock that down for quite some time as he continues his divisional title reign.
In addition, GSP has the most dominant monthly period of all-time also, though fluctuations and changes in data cause this ranking to shift between he and Anderson Silva.
With respect to other current fighters on the Absolute list, I fully expect Dan Henderson to rise up and possibly challenge for a Top 5 spot. As discussed within the All-Time rankings page, these are career-long and are very slow in reacting to recent activity.
As Diaz/GSP approaches, we should recognize that every time we see GSP and Anderson Silva in the octagon, we are watching two of the very greatest in the sport’s history.
With the sport still in it’s infancy and growing at an unprecedented pace, it’s clear that the greatest fighters of today are also the greatest of all time. What will be the next level of MMA evolution, and will St. Pierre’s and Silva’s accomplishments be eclipsed by the next generation of young fighters?
