Bang for Your Buck: UFC Fight Night 64

Posted on April 9, 2015 by Oleg

Ah, Fight Pass.  The red-headed stepchild of the UFC broadcasting family.  At this point it’s pretty clear that since I am only considering live UFC fights and not the additional content that Fight Pass has to offer, the value will not be worth the subscription price.  Especially with Fox Sports 1 gobbling up Fight Pass-worthy cards such as Maia-LaFlare, and sometimes even showing the lowest of the prelims, e.g. Fight Night 63.

This leads us into the first Fight Pass-exclusive event of the year: UFC Fight Night 64, live from Krakow, Poland.  As these cards usually tend to be, it has very few recognizable names or highly ranked fighters, and is mainly designed to appeal to the local crowd.  There are usually one or two interesting fights at the top of the card, but in this case UFC decided to cap it off with one of the most pointless rematches in the history of the organization.

Main Event: [#23 HW] Gabriel Gonzaga vs  [#27 HW] Mirko Filipovic

Worth: $1

Why: For some odd reason, the UFC match makers really love rematches.  After all, if the first fight between the two fighters was great, why not do it again, right?  While sometimes a rematch makes all the sense in the world, unfortunately this is not one of those instances, because in 2015 this fight makes no sense at all.

When these two first met at UFC 70 back in 2007, Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic was near the very top of the heavyweight heap. Fresh off winning the Pride 2006 open-weight Gran Prix, capped off by a knockout win over Wanderlei Silva and a TKO stoppage of Josh Barnett, Cro Cop was  ranked #2 in the division, and predicted by most fans to run over the UFC heavyweights when he joined the promotion.  Despite scoring a first-round TKO against a deer-in-the-headlights Eddie Sanchez, Mirko looked a bit tentative in his UFC debut.  This was attributed to the infamous ‘Octagon jitters’ and he was still on a collision course with then champion Randy Couture – until Gabriel Gonzaga spoiled his plans with a bit of ground-and-pound followed up by the kick heard around the world.

Defeating Cro Cop with his own biggest weapon marked one of the most memorable, jaw dropping finishes in history of the sport.  The win secured a title shot for Gonzaga, and marked the begging of Mirko’s decline: though he went 8-6 with 1 NC since then, he has never again beaten an elite opponent.  Gabriel Gonzaga hasn’t fared much better, amassing an 8-8 record with his biggest win coming over Ben Rothwell in 2013, after a very brief retirement.  It’s very unlikely to expect a Mark Hunt-like late career resurrection from the 40-year-old Mirko, and just as unlikely that Gonzaga will ever be more than a gatekeeper for the elite: though at 35 he might have a few more good years left in his career, his lack of conditioning, porous striking defense, questionable chin, and non-existent game planning cancel out his world class grappling and immense striking power.  Cro Cop, on the other hand, is still essentially a one-dimensional striker who complains about his dislike for elbow strikes in MMA and thinks that the ground game should be limited in the UFC.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Gonzaga takes it based on age advantage, psychological advantage from the first fight, and besides that simply having more ways to win.  But really no matter how this fight goes, anything short of a flying gogoplata will be a disappointment compared to the outcome of their first bout.  I understand that Mirko wants to end his career in the UFC and avenge the most brutal loss he has suffered, but would much prefer both fighters to face someone else.  Sometimes it’s best to let sleeping dogs lie, and let old fight results stand.  There was no need for a do-over in this one, and I have very little interest in seeing it.

Bang for Your Buck: UFC Fight Night 62

Posted on March 18, 2015 by Oleg

The UFC has been having a blockbuster year so far, with the Pay-Per-View buy rates and TV ratings showing  a marked increase from 2014.  And even the events that didn’t look so hot on paper, like UFC 184, turned out to be entertaining.  Lets see if the trend continues this Saturday, as UFC will broadcast another mediocre-looking Fight Night card from Brazil, live on Fox Sports 1.

Main Event: [#10 WW] Demian Maia vs [#20 WW] Ryan LaFlare

Worth: $5

Why: Most of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Demian Maia’s 19 UFC fights have followed one of two MOs.  Opponents who are willing to grapple with Maia or unable to stop his takedowns, face either a brutal submission or an extended domination on the mat.  Those who are not willing to engage Maia on the ground, and able to keep the fight standing, usually end up winning a decision due to Demian’s serviceable but not elite striking.  Of course there are a couple of exceptions to this rule – e.g. the one-punch KO Maia suffered at the hands of Nate Marquardt, or running into someone like Jake Shields who is able to stifle Maia’s grappling with a strong top game.  But for the most part, we either get to see Maia the grappler or Maia the kickboxer; as he has not been able to smoothly transition between the stand-up and ground phases of a fight.

Which version of Maia we see depends largely on his opponent.   Enter Ryan LaFlare – an undefeated welterweight prospect who came into the UFC at 7-0, with 100% finish rate.  While LaFlare was able to keep his record unblemished in the Octagon, he didn’t have as much luck finishing his opponents, winning all four of his UFC fights by decision.  His wins include solid mid-level names like Court McGee and John Howard, but he is taking a big step up in competition here with Maia as his first top-10 opponent.

How exciting this fight will be depends largely on Ryan’s ability to keep the fight standing.  If he can, then he is likely to win another dull decision and continue his rise in the ranks.  Otherwise, he will fall victim to Maia’s ground game, which usually makes for a fun fight (unless you’re Maia’s opponent).  Based on Demian’s recent performances and LaFlare’s potential, I am leaning towards the first outcome.

Bang for Your Buck: UFC Fight Night 61

Posted on February 19, 2015 by Oleg

So you thought last week’s Fight Night 60 was a weak card?  Coming up this Sunday live from Brazil, is another abomination of an UFC card, also known as Fight Night 61: Bigfoot vs Mir.  I really don’t remember what the original line-up for this event was supposed to look like before the injuries got throught with it… and I can’t even be bothered to look it up.  Whatever it was, the final line-up only has two fights that I am even remotely interested in.

Main Event:  [#6 HW] Antonio Silva vs [#55 HW] Frank Mir

Worth: $5

Why:  This fight is kind of like a horrific car crash.  You know you should just keep driving and  keep your eyes on the road, but you can’t help rubber-necking to catch a glimpse of the carnage.  Mir is a shot fighter, who hasn’t fought in over a year and hasn’t won a fight in 3 years.   Not only did he lose his last four fights, he presented zero threat to any of those opponents.  There was a point in time when I would have been excited to see Frank getting his face bashed in, but at this point I am more concerned about his health.  Mir’s pre-fight statements that his future in the sport depends not on whether he wins or loses this fight but rather on his overall performance does not inspire any confidence either – it’s as if he is already resigned to lose.  His opponent ‘Bigfoot’ Silva has been hot-or-cold through most of his career, and may also be a bit chinny; but while Mir has decent KO power, his robotic striking is unlikely to present a serious threat to Silva.  Frank’s only hope to finish up his career on a win is if Bigfoot decides to test his grappling mettle and takes the fight it to the ground.  More likely, this will end with fifth consecutive loss and forced retirement for Mir.

Bang for Your Buck: UFC Fight Night 60

Posted on February 12, 2015 by Oleg

After a fairly strong start of 2015, UFC has hit another slog.  Though the first two Pay-Per-View events of the year were entertaining and brought strong ratings, the aftermath of the fights was overshadowed by the high-profile drug test failures in the main events of UFC 182 and 183.  Meanwhile the “injury bug” has been taking some PED’s of it’s own, and pretty much decimated the next 3 upcoming cards, leaving us without much to look forward to in the month of February.  Sure, there is a fight card every weekend for the rest of the month, but all three cards leave a lot to be desired.  Let’s start with the upcoming UFC Fight Night 60: Henderson vs Thatch, broadcast on Fox Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Main Event:  [#4 LW] Ben Henderson vs  [NR] Brandon Thatch

Worth: $10

Why:  Sometimes there is a bit of silver lining in all the line-up changes due to injuries, and we actually end up with a more interesting fight as a result.  I believe this is the case here.  Originally, Brandon Thatch was supposed to face Stephen Thompson on this card,  as the co-main event to Matt Brown vs Tarec Saffiedine. After Saffiedine withdrew from the fight with an injury, Thompson vs Thatch was promoted to main event – until Thompson also dropped off the card. Fortunately, Ben Henderson was looking to make a quick turn-around and rebound from his two loss streak, and offered to move up to welterweight on short notice.

I find this fight to be slightly more interesting than either of the previously scheduled main events for this card, mainly because it’s a very unpredictable match-up of styles instead of striker-vs-striker. There are many other questions to be answered here:  how will Henderson look as a welterweight, and how will he deal with the size disadvantage?  Will Thatch be affected by the long layoff?  Is he ready to take on an elite wrestler in his first five-round bout?   I’m looking forward to finding out the answers on Saturday.

UFC on FOX 14 / Ratings vs. Odds

Posted on January 23, 2015 by Jason

This is not an attempt to suggest the rating system is more accurate than gambling odds.  Gamblers can analyze each fight individually, while the rating system uses a variety of mathematical routines to supply a primary fighter rating that is focused on ranking recent achievement, with a secondary priority of gauging future expectation.

Before focusing too closely on our ratings vs. odds, please remember, that we take an overall average of the odds presented by roughly a dozen major sites.

With that said, there are some caveats to using the rating vs. odds comparison straight-up — the “Gotcha” list:

  1. System inability to project the exact effects of a recent divisional change.
  2. System inability to project the exact effects of recent inactivity.
  3. Poor matchmaking / limited careers / “changing of the guard”.
  4. Notable home advantage.

Experienced gamblers know that it’s not about being right the most, it’s about making the most money.  So in the usual table, I’ll add the “I’d bet on” column and analyze the rating/odds gap plus points #1-4 that I listed above.  In addition to those, there should also be considerations to stylistic differences and the possibility of bad scoring — both of which, will not be considered here.

The gotchas aren’t necessarily comprehensive, but I have noted them as I come across them and when they are considered in the decision.

Having said all that, let’s get started:

Ratings vs. Odds

Fight Odds Favorite Rating Favorite I’d bet on “Gotchas”
Beal vs. Seery Beal (-207 / Moderate) Beal (1.41x / Small) PASS #1
Bektic vs. Redmond Bektic (-707 / Very Large) Bektic (1.38x / Small) Redmond #1, #3
Erokhin vs. Pesta Erokhin (-372 / Large) Erokhin (4.18x / Massive) Erokhin
Christodoulou vs. Taisumov Taisumov (-865 / Very Large) Taisumov (2.40x / Large) PASS
Krylov vs. Nedkov Krylov (-126 / Very Small) Krylov (1.75x / Moderate) PASS #1, #2
Amirkhani vs. Ogle Ogle (-152 / Small) Ogle (1.00x / EVEN) Amirkhani
Robertson vs. Aliev Aliev (-156 / Small) Robertson (1.11x / Very Small) PASS #1
Musoke vs. Tumenov Tumenov (-134 / Very Small) Musoke (1.27x / Small) Musoke #4
Corassani vs. Sicilia Corassani (-128 / Very Small) Corassani (1.85x / Moderate) Corassani
Davis vs. Bader Davis (-253 / Moderate) Davis (1.77x / Moderate) PASS
Mousasi vs. Henderson Mousasi (-504 / Very Large) Henderson (1.80x / Moderate) Henderson #1
Gustafsson vs. Johnson Gustafsson (-284 / Moderate) Johnson (1.16x / Very Small) PASS #4

Now, to the results — given the odds above:

The PASS suggests that the odds and ratings difference are nearly identical and/or there are too many relevant gotchas, so neither fighter is a good bet.

Favorites to consider: Corassani and Erokhin are the two favorites I’d consider backing here.  Erokhin, due to the substantial rating advantage and Corassani mainly due to the hometown advantage.

Underdogs to consider:

  • Redmond over Bektic – Bektic is a huge odds favorite and while Redmond is dropping a division, this seems like a reasonable chance to take.
  • Amirkhani over Ogle – The ratings are basically even and with Ogle having such a poor stretch, I’d side with the newcomer in this one who is also close to home.
  • Musoke over Tumenov – Styles aside, I see no reason to go against Musoke.  Rating advantage + Hometown advantage typically equals favorite.
  • Henderson over Mousasi – I’ve been known to side with the aging legend when I shouldn’t.  In this case, Mousasi to me, is not a -500 favorite.  He feels more like a -250 favorite to me, at best.  It’s almost as if people are getting Mousasi mixed up with Machida.

Johnson is a really tempting pick.  If this event were anywhere else, I would’ve picked him in a second.
