All-Time Rankings: Dan Henderson reaches a milestone

Posted on November 7, 2011 by Jason

Dan Henderson has recently become the first fighter to reach the Top 50 in three divisions: Heavyweight (#46), Light Heavyweight (#8), and Middleweight (#4).  There are 46 fighters (including Dan) who are on two divisional Top 50s.

Norifumi Yamamoto is his closest, active competitor as he is in three Top 55s.  A good streak at Bantamweight would see him join Dan.  However Yamamoto is not in any Top 25 (or 30).  Evan Tanner also shares Yamamoto’s feat, but is in a Top 25 @ Middleweight (#20).

When expanding to Top 60 as the qualifier, Jeremy Horn and Akihiro Gono make the cut.   Expanding to Top 75 adds four more fighters (Vitor Belfort, Jeff Curran, BJ Penn, Anderson Silva).

In case you are unfamiliar with our All-Time Rankings, check them out here.

Highest ranking now displayed in Historical Ranking search

Posted on October 3, 2011 by Oleg

We’re on a roll with new features today – thanks forum member kedbecker for this suggestion!

In our fighter search, you can now quickly look up the highest a fighter has been ever ranked in our generated historical ranking sets. For example, if you search for ‘Sakuraba’ you can quickly see the highest ranking for one of MMA’s pioneers: Kazushi Sakuraba was ranked #1 Middleweight in October of 1998 (in case of ties, the heaviest weight class and the most recent ranking set are shown).

Lineal Championship History: Heavyweights

Posted on September 22, 2011 by Jason

First, a run-down of the particulars:

  • Inception of the championship occured on 10/14/1993, the first “top contender” match-up that took place within this division.
  • Vacancies after inactivity periods were fulfilled by the next “top contender” match.  Absence of such, was not a problem at Heavyweight.

Your current lineal Heavyweight champion is Alistair Overeem

Lineal Championship History: Light Heavyweights

First, a run-down of the particulars:
  • Due to potential metric conversion issues and weight class changes, a limit of 206 pounds is observed for this list.
  • Inception of the championship occurred on 12/21/1997.  The late start was due to the lack of guidance by an organization, with no semblance of matchmaking.  Before the UFC, the Light Heavyweight division was used a “stop gap” between Middleweight and Heavyweight.
  • Only one period of inactivity was seen in this lineage.
Your current lineal Light Heavyweight champion is Jon Jones

First, a run-down of the particulars:
  • Due to potential metric conversion issues and weight class changes, a limit of 187 pounds is observed for this list.
  • Inception of the championship occured on 5/18/1989, the first fight in the division.
  • Sporadic periods of inactivity were observed throughout the first half of the lineage.  Clear “top contender” matches took place to determine the next champion.
Your current lineal Middleweight champion is Anderson Silva

“What Ever Happened to…?” Alex Owen

Posted on September 21, 2011 by Jonathan

Bristol, England pugilist Alex Owen (19 – 1 – 0) (last ranking [#52FW] in July 2008) was going somewhere in MMA.  From 2002 to 2007, Owen tore through the British featherweight ranks, scoring victories over top fighters such as [#50BW] Paul McVeigh (18 – 6 – 0) and WEC veteran [#27BW] Brad Pickett (20 – 5 – 0).

By then he was 19-0, 14 of those wins coming by stoppage.  However, following his first loss to [*] Emmanuel Fernandez (9 – 4 – 1) (another talented yet inexplicably inactive fighter), everything changed.  An excerpt from an article written by Chris Cork on mmahitpit.com gives some details on the situation:

“…Like most British fighters, Owen trained and competed part-time while holding down a full-time day job.    For the past eight-and-a-half years he has paid the bills serving as a Police Constable with Avon & Somerset Constabulary – a job which permitted him to fight professional MMA.  That was until July 2007 when, following a loss to Emmanuel Fernandez, Owen was told he would no longer be allowed to fight…”

Owen has not fought since.

Fighters who have the luxury to train full-time should feel fortunate. A story like this illustrates the harsh reality that only a select few will be truly successful in the fight game.  If a talent like Alex Owen could be forced to leave the sport he loved (and did remarkably well in) due to financial issues, then it could happen to any fighter.  We can hope that as MMA continues to grow as a global sport, less and less talented fighters will have to suffer similar fates as Owen.

At the end of the article, Owen talks about his possible return to the cage, but unfortunately the article was written in May 2010.  Perhaps (and hopefully) we have not seen the last of Alex Owen in MMA.

Lineal Championship History: Bantamweights

Posted on September 21, 2011 by Jason

First, a run-down of the particulars:

  • Due to potential metric conversion issues and weight class changes, a limit of 137 pounds is observed for this list.
  • Inception of the championship occured on 7/29/1989, the fifth known professional fight taking place at or below 137 pounds, which included the first two winners of Bantamweight bouts in a previous event (the other two bouts were draws).
  • Periodic inactivity was a sporadic issue in the Bantamweight division.  In early history, ranked fights were so sporadic, that the winners of these “best available” matches were used to fill gaps.  Idea is to not allow title vacancy for more than 2 years. In later Bantamweight history, only fights between established 1/2, 1/3 or 2/3 were used.

Your current lineal Bantamweight champion is Dominick Cruz

Lineal Championships: The Man Who Beat The Man

Posted on September 21, 2011 by Jason

In the upcoming week or two, I plan to research all lineal championships from the beginning of MMA up until now, starting with Flyweight.  I wanted to post this announcement in an effort to get any type of brainstorming from our members on how to consider particular types of scenarios.  The challenges are:

  • Inception – Where does the championship start?  Is it different for each weight division?
  • Inactivity – Does a lineal championship “die” when the champion goes inactive or retires?  Does a new fighter pick up the championship?  How is this decided?
  • Weight Divisions – Divisional info isn’t always available and sometimes weight classes change throughout time.  Decisions will be made as to where the upper-limit barriers are.

These decisions and Flyweight.. coming soon.

Generated Historical Rankings now searchable

Posted on July 8, 2011 by Oleg

The recently published historical ranking sets are now searchable using our Fighter Search page.

See for yourself: http://www.fightmatrix.com/fighter-search/?fName=Nogueira

On a side note, the historical rankings have recently been regenerated up until 7/1/2007, to resolve a few issues and to reflect recent data improvements.

Generated Historical Rankings: Now Live

Posted on July 5, 2011 by Jason

The “Generated Historical Rankings” are now live and can be accessed via this link and through our nav menus.  The first ranking set was created for 1/1/1994, with subsequent ranking sets created on a quarterly basis.

We plan on refreshing these rankings every so often, as the software and historical data continues to improve.  The update frequency has yet to be determined.

Furthermore, I did my best to refine some past divisional data when I generated these rankings (which actually caused some changes on the All-Time Rankings).  However, there is CLEARLY room for improvement.  Items to consider are as follows:

  • Old divisional data is largely not available for early MMA — and often times, divisions were not at all considered.  If weights were available, I used that to derive a division.  Trust me when I say, I am an exceptional researcher — though I don’t always have the research material available.  For lack of complexity and confusion, I kept our same divisional ranges when generating the historical rankings.
  • The Division Dominance lists aren’t always going to make sense due to the above.
  • In almost all usually controlled instances, top fighters were not kept in their native division for making one-time unsuccessful stops in other divisions (Example: Rua getting Hammerhoused at Heavyweight) — the type of “common sense” stuff that is easier to keep track of for current rankings.  I’m more than willing to make these changes, but updates will only be reflected when the sets are refreshed.
  • When tuning and updating the software, preference is always given to the present.  It’s possible that I “missed” a few items that should have been adjusted to the date of the generated ranking when generating them, though, we obviously aim for making the current rankings shine.

Feel free to offer any suggestions to us for improvements.

Generated Historical Ranking Sets

Posted on July 1, 2011 by Jason

In the near future, we will be releasing a new feature: Generated Historical Ranking Sets

This will allow you to view issues of divisional rankings which predate FightMatrix, that have been generated by a recent version of the software rating system.  Ever curious what the Top 25 Heavyweight list looked like in 1999, or who the #1 Middleweight was in 2002?  This feature will solve those problems.

However, let it be known that data in the early days (as well as the amount of fights) was extremely sparse.  Expect some anomalies as a result.

Later down the road, we plan on creating fighter profiles that will leverage this data and display a timeline or historical ranking on a fighter-per-fighter basis.
