The Uncut Sports Show – UFC on Fuel TV: Renan Barao vs. Michael McDonald

We’re excited to announce a partnership with The Uncut Sports Show to present a different take on the latest happenings in the mixed martial arts world.

The Uncut Sports Show is an uncensored sports news show featuring co-hosts Kevin White and George Bedford who offer their brash, comic and often non-politically-correct views on a mix of topics ranging from sports, controversial sports news, pop culture, gaming, as well as the often ridiculous day-to-day lives of the hosts.

This Saturday the Fuel TV 7 card will air from historic Wembley Arena in London. The main event is features Renan Barao going up against Michael McDonald in a battle for the interim bantamweight title. Che Mills and Matthew Riddle will meet in a welterweight bout. Mills has won 7 of his last 8, with that one lost coming to Rory MacDonald. While Riddle has been dealing with personal obstacles stemming from his drug suspension last year, to the birth of twin daughters.

James Te-Huna will face Ryan Jimmo. These to light-heavyweights both possess loads of KO power. If you recall Ryan Jimmo recorded the fastest KO in UFC history the last time he stepped into the Octagon.Gunnar Nelson an undefeated BJJ blackbelt will try and keep his perfect MMA record on the line against Jorge Santiago. Santiago has been kind of hit or miss lately, and this will be his first fight back in the UFC.
Jimi Manuwa who is also undefeated in his MMA career with 12 wins and 11 coming by way of KO, will face Cyrille Diabate a former lengthy kickboxer who also has the ability to put you to sleep.Cub Swanson is on a three fight win streak, and during this streak he has finished every one of his opponents. Dustin Poirer would like to put an end to that in this featherweight matchup.

Finally we have the interim Bantamweight title with Barao going up against McDonald. McDonald is impressive at 15-1 and his last two fights he finished his opponents with impressive KO’s. However he has a huge task in facing Barao who currently holds one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MMA today at 29 fights dating back to 2005.

The Imperfect Science of MMA Fight Data

A boring Saturday morning led me into one of the lesser known MMA fight databases on the Internet: http://www.valetudo.ru

Although their overall accuracy and capacity is far less than that of Sherdog’s Fight Finder, they house quite a bit of eastern European and Russian fight results that are valid. I presume that Sherdog visits their site and pulls Russian results from them, months, and sometimes even years later.

Some preliminary data retrieval brought to a light a potential prospect that seemingly no one has stumbled upon — as far as I know. It also presented a common problem and difficulty with MMA data collection.

Case in point, a fighter named Kairat Ahmietov, or is it Kayrat Akhmetov, or maybe it’s Kairat Ahmetov? Cyrillic to English conversion, typos, and misspellings aside, this type of identity mix-up is not uncommon, especially when dealing with non-Americans.

However, what do you do in this case?

The worst part about this case, is that Valetudo, the Russian-based site is the main offender for a mix-up situation. Also visit the 15-0 profile and note that 12 of his 15 opponents are unknown. The most intriguing part about this fighter, is that he is allegedly a Flyweight. Given the weakness of the division and its recent action-packed debut into the UFC, the idea of an unknown, potentially undefeated Flyweight with nearly 20 wins is something to salivate over.

But, what about pro/am distinction? A Youtube journey of some of his fully known fights (opponents with actual names) mentions the word “amateur” in the description. Then again, does rural Kazakhstan have a legitimate commission to make this type of sanctioning distinction? Should we care and just record the results anyway, knowing that there are likely thousands of less legitimate fights already in the database?

Just some food for thought, for the thinkers out there.

The Ultimate Fighter 16, Episode 11 Review

In Episode 11, John Manley took home an uninspired majority decision win over his teammate Joey Rivera. In the remaining quarter-final bout, Mike Ricci dominated Mike Hill for a unanimous decision.

The final win tally is Team Carwin 5, Team Nelson 5 in head-to-head matchups. With the two semifinals bouts set up to be teammate-vs-teammate, the finals will serve as a tie-breaker. And with Matt Mitrione stepping up to fight Roy Nelson as a replacement for the injured Shane Carwin, the question remains if the coaches will face off somewhere down the line.

That’s right… former multiple time WWE Champion Dave “Batista” Bautista is now fighting in pro MMA. Even though he supposedly cut some muscle, he still weighed in at 265.5 lbs. Lucero on the other hand, was a not so solid, 300 lbs.

A lineal championship recently changed hands.

The term “lineal championship” has traditionally been linked to boxing moreso than MMA, but in case you didn’t know, we track our own lineal championship histories.

In short, it’s “the man, who beat the man, who beat the man, etc.” Some judgment calls are required to fill in gaps that champions create when moving divisions, retiring, and taking extended absences — not to mention, when the lineage actually starts. It’s really more interesting than it is legit, especially considering the fighters haven’t known the titles were on the line and the matches weren’t impacted in any way (extended length).

When Eddie Alvarez recently beat Shinya Aoki, he claimed our Lineal Lightweight Championship. This win came after his loss to Chandler, so he’s rated below Chandler but still holds the lineal title.

Currently, five of the UFC champions hold lineal designations. Ian McCall’s will likely be consumed or merged with the UFC Flyweight championship, with Overeem’s and Alvarez’s claims staying dislocated from the Zuffa juggernaut’s champions.

Prospect Profile: Alexander Sarnavskiy

If you’ve been paying attention to our MMA Records & Statistics page, you already know that Alexander Sarnavskiy holds the current record for most career wins without a loss — 18.

Some facts about Sarnavskiy:

Currently ranked #62 in the Lightweight division. He’s come ever so close to getting into the Top 50.
He’s only 23 years old and is averaging almost 6 fights per year.
His last five opponents average a pre-fight record of 10-5, which is actually pretty good. For comparison sake, Khabib Nurmagomedov, his near equal, is at 8-5 and this includes his UFC debut.
