Fighter Purses and Casino Payouts: Why Both Still Run on Bank Transfers in New Zealand

Posted on October 7, 2026 by A. J. Riot

Carlos Ulberg left Miami in April with the UFC light heavyweight title and a badly damaged knee. The Auckland fighter knocked out Jiří Procházka in the first round at UFC 327 on 11 April. Reports since suggest the injury could keep him out for up to a year. That puts a spotlight on something fans rarely see: how a fighter’s money actually reaches New Zealand. The answer is old-fashioned. It still travels by bank transfer, much like casino payouts.

How a UFC Purse Is Put Together

Most UFC deals still use a show-and-win structure. A fighter on US25,000 to win banks the first figure for turning up. Victory doubles it. Performance bonuses can add more on a good night, while top earners tend to negotiate flat guarantees. None of it is paid in New Zealand dollars. The UFC is an American company, so every cent starts life in US currency.

Why the Money Still Travels by Bank

For a Kiwi fighter, that purse typically crosses the Pacific as an international bank transfer. It is slower than a card payment, but it leaves a clear trail. Fans weigh the same trade-off at home. That is partly why a bank transfer deposit in NZ casinos stays popular for larger sums. The money never leaves the banking system, and both banks keep a record.

Seven-Day Banking Changed the Timing

Speed used to be the weak point. An electronic payment made on a Saturday once sat until Monday. Payments NZ changed that when its main clearing system moved to processing every day of the year. Ten banks signed up, including ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Kiwibank and Westpac. Transfers within one bank are usually instant. Payments between different banks clear in regular cycles, often within an hour.

Cross-border transfers are another story. A purse sent from Las Vegas can take several working days and lose a slice to fees and exchange rates. Once it lands in Auckland, though, moving it around is quick.

That matters on fight weekends. A Saturday night main card in the United States lands on Sunday afternoon in New Zealand. Payments made during the broadcast no longer wait for Monday to clear.

Who Gets Paid From the Purse

A disclosed purse is not take-home pay. Fighters fund their own camps, and most of those costs are settled by bank transfer:

  • Management, which commonly takes 10–20% of the purse.
  • Head coaches, who are often paid around 10%.
  • Travel, medicals and tax, which come out of the same pot.

One estimate suggests a US$50,000 payday can net roughly half that figure. Every one of those payments leaves a record, which matters at tax time.

Ulberg’s own case shows how the pieces stack up. He arrived at UFC 327 on a nine-fight winning streak. He left with a Performance of the Night bonus on top of his purse. Like the rest of his pay, that bonus had to be converted before it was any use in Auckland.

New Rules Nudge Casinos the Same Way

The Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 came into force on 1 May. Under the Department of Internal Affairs’ online gambling program, up to 15 operators will be licensed. Licensed sites will not be allowed to accept credit cards or buy now, pay later services. That leaves debit cards and bank transfers as the obvious routes.

Timing is tight. Operators that have not applied for a license must stop serving New Zealanders from 1 December 2026. According to Sport NZ’s summary of the new law, licenses are expected from early 2027. A share of online casino revenue will go back to communities, including grassroots sport.

Same Pipes, Different Stakes

Ulberg’s next purse may be a while coming. When it arrives, it will move the usual way – bank to bank, with a record at each step. For fans, the lesson is simple. Treat any casino spend as entertainment, set a limit before fight night and stop when you reach it. Free support is available on the Gambling Helpline, 0800 654 655.
