Nunes puts her title on the line for the first time since reclaiming it in July by defeating Julianna Pena via knockout at UFC 277. Her opponent, Irene Aldana, is a born finisher who has also won her past three fights by knockout.

Nunes and Pena were supposed to finish their trilogy, but Pena’s injury gave Aldana her chance. Since becoming the dual champion and avenging her sole loss in eight years, Nunes has controlled the women’s bantamweight and featherweight categories with an iron hand.

Two things can happen at the end of the bout, both of which we will explain below.

Irene Aldana Could be the Fourth UFC’s Mexico-Born Champion Crowned in 2023

At UFC 263 in 2021, Mexico native Brandon Moreno fought Deiveson Figueiredo to win the flyweight title. He made history as the first UFC champion from his country.

This year’s first interim featherweight champion was Yair Rodriguez, who defeated Josh Emmett with a Performance of the Night. A month later, Mexican-born fighter Alexa Grasso stunned the MMA community by submitting Valentina Shevchenko to win the women’s flyweight title.

Aldana can become the fourth champion of Mexican ancestry if she defeats Nunes in Vancouver. She has always been a devastating finisher, but it wasn’t until recently that her strength was truly unleashed inside the “Octagon.” At UFC 245, Aldana showed MMA fans that she had dynamite in her hands by knocking out No. 2 contender Ketlen Vieira.

Then, Aldana showed her strength by knocking out Yana Santos in the first round after a tough five rounds with previous champion Holly Holm. Aldana knocked out Macy Chiasson with an upkick to the body in her most recent match. This demonstrated that she could draw strength from any direction.

In the main event of UFC 289, Aldana will put in her best effort to defeat “The Lioness” on June 10.

Amanda Nunes Could Tie Anderson Silva With 11 Title Fight Wins

Amanda Nunes is definitely one of the strongest champions in UFC history. She proved that after losing her championship for the first time in seven years to Julianna Pena at UFC 269.

In 2016, Nunes began her reign when she won the bantamweight championship through submission over Miesha Tate. Nunes challenged women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg after three successful title defenses.

During these defenses, she defeated Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko, and Raquel Pennington. Nunes defeated Cyborg in under a minute with a barrage of blows, making her the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in two weight classes.

Nunes defended both championships and lost to Pena after defeating Holly Holm, Germaine de Randamie, Felicia Spencer, and Megan Anderson. Nunes, with both titles once again slung over her shoulders, will defend against the punishing Aldana in Vancouver. In this match, she hopes to equal Anderson Silva’s record of 11 title fight victories.
