Rating Set #9 to be released 2/25/08
Ratings to be updated with the following considerations:
– Takanori Gomi has entered the inactive penalty stage several days ago, and will be dropped from the Lightweight rankings due to over 365 days of inactivity. Gesias Calvancanti will be the new #1 ranked Lightweight.
– Results of recent cards from Shooto, HDNet, DEEP, and others, will be reflected.
– Minor maintenance was performed with regards to fighter divisions. Some fighters will receive their accurate division assignment per the guidelines of the system. This is simply a maturation process of the system.
– Through my independent research, I have verified that fights taking place during the Ultimate Fighter: Season 2, were in fact, officially sanctioned pro bouts. Other than the finals, this is the only season where this is the case. As such, they will be added to the rating system database. This was confirmed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission web site.
– Other minor bouts in past years have been added to the MMA database.
It is needless to say, that all of these points will cause some moderate shuffling within the rankings.

Official Set #8 Released
Ratings as of February 21, 2008
– This is just a maintenance release. Bouts were added from various times in MMA history.
– Implemented methods to incorporate professional bouts that are not on the Sherdog database. This will be handled on a case-by-case basis in instances where results can be verified through an independent source. We still rely 99.9% on Sherdog’s database.

Talk about never say die….
A recent question from a BoxRec forum poster put me on the hunt to find out which boxer had the largest amount of consecutive losses before winning a bout.
Believe it or not, a boxer named Frankie Hines lost 51 consecutive bouts before winning again. The streak spanned over 7 years (Dec 1993 – Mar 2001). He won twice more after this, and retired with a record of 17-120-5. Boxers, Frank Wuestenberghs, and Arv Mittoo, receive the silver and bronze, with streaks of 49, and 46, respectively.

Official Set #7 Released!
Ratings released on Feb 17, 2008 with the following considerations:
– SmackGirl, EliteXC, and other minor shows have results which affect primarily the Heavyweight and Women’s division.
– Version 1.03 of the rating system is launched. The latest update has very minor changes.
– Top 60 rankings have been expanded to Top 75!!
Minor bugfix in next ratings release.
Version 1.03
– Prevented excessive credit for opposition quality in cases of blow-out losses to much higher opposition.
– Corrected possible bug with regards to fighters losing beyond expected maximum points if recent opposition is extremely poor.
These changes will be present in set #7, which should be released on Sunday, Feb 17. These changes will have very minor effects on the rankings.
WEC Review
On February 13th, World Extreme Cagefighting made its debut in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Three titles were up for grabs as WEC’s welterweight, lightweight, and bantamweight champions all put their belts on the line. It so turned out that two of them walked away empty handed from this night of mostly great fights.
Official Update #6 released!
The major changes in the rankings are due to the WEC 32 card, last night in Albuquerque. Carlos Condit’s win boosts him up to #6 at Welterweight, but does nothing to help “unclog” the #6-12 area where top fighters are separated by hardly any points at all. Bantamweight and Featherweight rankings have changed dramatically after last night’s WEC. MMA needs this kind of competition in the lower weight divisions.
Look for the next update on Sunday.
Official Update #6 Today & #7 Sunday/Monday (w/ expansion)
Just a reminder, official update #6 will be released today, while #7 will be released either Sunday or Monday. Along with #7, we will further expand the rankings. The extent of this expansion will be determined at the time of the update.
A shoutout to FightMetric.com
This one is for those of you who harbor a vast interest in the analytical side of the sport. Here at FightMatrix, the software behind the scenes considers the participants and outcomes of professional MMA matches to come up with divisional rankings.
Not only does FightMetric look at the fight basics, but they hand select particular fights, and dig down into every intricacy of those fights, no matter how small, to come up with various metrics and statistics, including those which challenge the decisions of the judges. Furthermore, for UFC 81, they posted a “Total Performance Report” which offers a basic summary of each participating fighter’s individual performances.
To view these reports and gain a better understanding of their methodology, feel free to visit @ http://www.fightmetric.com
Official Update #5 Released. Visit the forums!
A very small update has been released. Josh Rave, has blasted onto the extremely thin Flyweight (130 and under) rankings with a defeat over the previously ranked #9 fighter, Omar Chowdury. Rave likely should have been ranked before this, but we did not know his division. Also, some bout results have been updated and applied, causing one of Anthony Lapsley’s wins to be overturned, dropping him like a stone in the Welterweight division. Set #6 will be released after the WEC show on 2/13.

Official Update #4 Released
This update includes consideration of the Misaki/Akiyama result fix, about 100 old bouts, and some divisional corrections.
Akiyama/Misaki changed to NC
I’m sure this happened weeks ago, but someone just brought it to my attention. As a result, Middleweight will shake up a bit upon the next rankings update. The next official update will occur this week. The update will feature this change and some very minor bout additions/updates.
