Hi, you have Fraser Opie as from the UK. He’s from South Africa as per his Sherdog record.

Do go on about how Vera is worthy of the 27th LHW ranking, yet Thiago Silva, who absolutely annihilated him, is the 39th ranked fighter. Love the site but this needs to be fixed.

Shouldn’t Vitor be ranked in LHW now?

  4. jason August 20, 2018 at 3:21 am Reply

As the move was believed to be temporary and amounted to nothing, we kept him at 185.

A disqualifiacation for ranking purposes should be noted and thrown out. This is a weakness of computer or statistical ranking. Jon Jones is easily a top ten fighter. He totally dominated Matt Hamill. A loss my disqualification should be set aside.

Its arguable whether or not we should have left Lombard at Light Heavy…. I could see both sides of the argument.

  14. marvin August 20, 2018 at 3:10 am Reply

heavyweight would be the class where a non champ is #1, plus i don’t think rampage will be at 2 after the rashad fight. Rua should be 2

for the evans comment how in the hell is evans a punk as of right now he is the only consistent light heavy since liddell’s glory days he has not lost a fight and the tito fight was a joke he should have won that one instead of a draw when/if he beats machida you still won’t call him legit because who in the hell has lyoto machida beaten other than tito ortiz

How is my boy Bonnar #52? If past performance/competition is indicative of ranking 4 of his losses are to top 4 fighters (3 by decision and 1 to TKO by cut). He has a win over Schafer #26, Irvin #27, and Jardine #11. His last loss was to Jones #25.

If you are going to say it was because he was inactive for awhile then you need to drop Shogun out of the 20. Prior to beating an over the hill Coleman his last win was over 2 years ago.

So if you look at past competition and performance you need to be consistent.

  21. IcyB August 20, 2018 at 3:06 am Reply

These rankings are not biased. They are computer generated based on who wins and who loses…the way it should be. Let the fighters decide their rankings. If they want to be top 10 then they have to beat somebody in that top 10, or streak up lots of wins in impressive fashion against good opposition. The fighters decide their fate, not journalists.

When Bonnar fought Jones, he was prolly ranked higher than he is now…and Jones was prolly ranked 100 or something.

  22. James Sanders August 20, 2018 at 3:06 am Reply

kevin randleman’s loss should knock him out of the top 50 and maybe start thinkin about the R word

well loco the ufc is saying if wanderlai wins he is in for a middleweight title fight and im sure if rich wins he’ll be the #1 contender for the Machida Rua fight winner since rampage is coaching as we read

I have a question… If Wandy and franklin are fighting at 195lbs where will the rankings be after the fight. Seince franklin is planning on staying at 205 and silva is moving down 185???

  25. the bro August 20, 2018 at 3:06 am Reply

‘adsurd’ is ‘absurd’ misspelled. i thought everybody knew that.

as for silva, his move may never be permanent. he’s certainly capable of becoming to the UFC what henderson was to Pride. in that case, if i understand how the matrix is set up, silva’s MW victories will impact his LHW ranking and vice versa.

or am i getting that wrong?

  26. Richard Wade August 20, 2018 at 3:06 am Reply

It has to do with where those fighters were ranked when he fought them. Not where they’re ranked now.

  27. Frank Winters August 20, 2018 at 3:04 am Reply

Please bump Forrest Griffin, Rich Franklin, Keith Jardine, Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva down. Anderson Silva & Dan Henderson need to be in the top 15 because they’ve only moved up to this weight class and been ruthless!!! Thiago Silva needs to be ranked higher than that!!! He just lost that one fight to Machida when the round should’ve been clearly over. Jon Jones is a beast! I hope Paulo Filho decides to come to UFC and showcase his skill in both the 185 & 205 weight class!

You should move Mike Kyle from heavyweight to light heavyweight. The fact he can hold (& has held) his own vs. top heavyweights doesn’t make him one! At 205, I have him top 15. Love this site; the best MMA rankings on the web.

I know but maybe the blocking algorithm shouldn’t take effect based on split/close decisions. It’s not like Rampage/Machida was a decisive win for Rampage.

  43. oleg August 19, 2018 at 10:32 pm Reply

The Jackson loss was proof Dana White doesn’t like Machida? I thought it was the judges who scored the fight for Rampage, not Dana White.

  44. jason August 19, 2018 at 10:32 pm Reply

If you are a longtime viewer of our site, you’ve probably figured out that fighters take their points to new divisions… this value is modified, but with Hendo’s past achievements at 185, 205, and his most recent win… How could he not be in the Top 10 and above Cavalcante?

When a few decent wins can get a guy a title, it should be no surprise that a fighter with a HOF-resume outside the organization can move in and take a higher rank position.

  45. jason August 19, 2018 at 10:32 pm Reply

Not much at all. Thiago’s will drop slightly. Vera’s will change negligibly.

Can we take a look at OSP’s most recent ranking? Something doesn’t seem quite right with him jumping ahead of Volkan Oezdemir after beating de Lima (was #40 LHW now #52). I feel like the block should still be in place since their fight happened only 2 months ago.

Thanks for all the work that’s put into these rankings.

OK maybe this will help you understand. Let’s go back in time to before their first fight, when Newton was #23 and Lawal was #11:

    http://www.fightmatrix.com/historical-mma-rankings/ranking-snapshots/?Issue=287&Division=2

Go forward from there to present and you shoud see how thing got to be the way they are. Keep in mind that Lawal fought and won at HW.

It’s really pointless to ask “why is X ranked over Y”. Unless X and Y just fought each other and neither fought anyone else since, there is no guarantee that the winner remains higher that the loser.

  57. Serg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Why do you not fall Jons, which is already more than a year does not act? Minakov have fallen below the vanquished, because the weak won, and Jons did not favor, but it’s still at the top, you can omit it scary? hand does not rise?

  58. oleg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Weak division, full of has-beens and never-will-bes beyond the top 5. Who would you have in the Top 10 over Evans?

  59. Serg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

why do you have someone who is caught at the reception prohibited items still retains first place?

  60. Serg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

I do not understand your policy, Newton twice won Lawal, but was now below defeated twice by knockout!

  61. Spence August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Not sure how Rashad Evans is still in the top 10 with no wins since 2013 but other than that, I like these rankings.

  62. oleg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

We drop fighters after 450 days of inactivity, but their rating starts to decay after a year. So Jones is currently in decay, but he is so far ahead of #2 in terms of rating points that there is no chance of him falling below Cormier. If he doesn’t fight in the 450 day timeframe since his last fight, he will be dropped from the rankings completely until he returns.

  63. oleg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Yes, either auto-drop by time frame, or we will force drop him if he receives a prison sentence or officially announces that he’s stepping away from the sport.

When a very similar incident happened with Rampage, we didn’t drop him from rankings, and he fought again just about 6 months later. Jon’s situation seems a bit more serious based on his prior’s and someone being injured; that said it’s still similar enough to follow the same precedent.

  64. John N. August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

I was expecting Jon Jones to be removed from the rankings. Are you just waiting for the auto drop time frame to pass?

  65. jason August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Gustafsson’s #1 achievement is a loss. Davis holds a win over Gustafsson. It doesn’t seem all that far fetched.

  66. oleg August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Deadline passed, DA didn’t have sufficient evidence to move forward. Case hasn’t been dropped, more or less put on hold. His terms of initial release expired, so since he has never been indicted, for the time being he is a free man with no legal restrictions. Bet he will fight by end of the year, or early 2016.

Gustafsson whould be either above or below Johnson putting Evans and Davis at 5 & 6.
    This is months overdue.

  69. jason August 19, 2018 at 7:32 pm Reply

Speaking of Jones.. wasn’t there a deadline of late June on his indictment? I never heard anything about one…..

My limited legal understanding suggests that if this didn’t happen, Jones “got off”? Something about due process.

My assumption is that this was misreported initially.

    Hey Guys,

Can we take a look at OSP’s most recent ranking? Something doesn’t seem quite right with him jumping ahead of Volkan Oezdemir after beating de Lima (was #40 LHW now #52). I feel like the block should still be in place since their fight happened only 2 months ago.

Thanks for all the work that’s put into these rankings.

  93. Serg January 26, 2016 at 12:33 am Reply

Why do you not fall Jons, which is already more than a year does not act? Minakov have fallen below the vanquished, because the weak won, and Jons did not favor, but it’s still at the top, you can omit it scary? hand does not rise?

  103. jason July 12, 2015 at 4:19 pm Reply

Speaking of Jones.. wasn’t there a deadline of late June on his indictment? I never heard anything about one…..

My limited legal understanding suggests that if this didn’t happen, Jones “got off”? Something about due process.

My assumption is that this was misreported initially.

  104. oleg June 16, 2015 at 9:41 pm Reply

Machida is the only one with the tools to compete with jones, and the rankings reflect it because there isn’t a single person who is significantly better than machida above him. a win over couture and someone like forrest griffin could easily have machida at #2 in 205 after everything plays out.

it should also be noted that by that time lyoto will have fought or be teammates with 15 of the top 50 lhw and thats not including guys from other weight classes on his team or bj penn (leites, nunes, fabiano, ishii, munoz, galvao, rizzo, thiago, dos santos, big nog, jacare, anderson silva and jose aldo).

Blocking may prevent that rating creep. If I’m #5 and I beat #4 by a close decision — then I turn around and smash #9.. should I be propelled above #4 if it has only been a few months?

[…] Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera once had lofty aspirations of becoming the first fighter to simultaneously hold the UFC heavyweight and light-heavyweight titles.  Unfortunately things don’t always work out as planned, and Vera now finds himself on a skid, losing his last three bouts and requiring major reconstructive facial surgery for the second time in as many fights.   Making his return to the Octagon after a loss to Jon Jones, who shattered Vera’s eye socket with an elbow, Vera took on Thiago Silva.  Fresh off back surgery and a long medical layoff of his own, Thiago dominated and humilated Vera for three rounds, winning a unanimous decision and turning Brandon’s nose into a grotesque caricature.  It will be a shocker if Vera’s release from UFC is not announced in the coming days. When a few decent wins can get a guy a title, it should be no surprise that a fighter with a HOF-resume outside the organization can move in and take a higher rank position.

Machida got demolished by Rua who was lower than Evans…. sometimes these things just happen..

The two options are blocking, or some type of retroactive guidance (changing the effect of previous fights based on more recent fights).

Blocking is way too concrete and in the cases of guidance, similar instances may still occur.

    There’s no good solution

Nice to know, thanks for the response. The Mercer issue isn’t because he is a boxer or because of his age. I personally think that high level boxers with the right training can be competitive in MMA. The only issue I have is he has only one fight and though I realize who he beat, I just don’t see it warranted. As far as Vera and Jardine go I was basing it on recent performances, such as this year. Again, despite my belief on where I think them or anyone else should be ranked I do enjoy this website immensely and I always look forward to the updated rankings.

‘Big 15’ refers to their records in what we conclude are the top 15 organizations.

The 540 Opp % is an experimental metric that’s meant to be a secondary metric (at the most).. perhaps even a tertiary one.

Quality Performance % is a career measure.

Jardine beat Vera and has shown recently that he can beat a higher quality opponent. Although he has more recent losses, they are to pretty highly rated opposition and thus, not quite as damaging. Jardine is just higher than Liddell (17th) and Vera (19th) who he recently beat by split. He lost recently to Wanderlei (13th), Jackson (2nd), and Thiago (10th). I see absolutely no problem with either Jardine or Vera’s rankings based on the objective results.

Mercer is 14th Heavyweight because he beat Tim Sylvia, who himself was in the Top 15 at the time of the bout. If Mercer wasn’t in his late 40s and known as a pro boxer, I doubt many people would have a problem with this.

  363. DJT December 19, 2009 at 12:27 am Reply

I very much enjoy this website but I think the way the rankings are computed need to be tweaked. I used to think it was pretty accurate now I just don’t understand how they get to where they are. One example of many is Jardine being ranked over Vera, looking at the statistics they are both 3-4 in the last 3 years but Vera is 9-4 against top 15 and Jardine is 6-6. Vera is better in Quality Performance and 540 opponent strength percentage. Why have those statistics if they aren’t valued to distinguish the rankings? Is Vera the better fighter, I don’t know but statistically it seems he is. And I don’t want to beat a dead horse but Ray Mercer the 14th heavyweight? How would you justify a computation of that? Just my thoughts.

I’m not disappointed in rampage, he only fought the best and he had a spectacular career. i wish i could have seen him fight rashad of course but that alright none the less. now that the fight between them is nixed i say take another route.

Dan henderson has said time and again that he does not want to fight anyone else at middleweight except anderson silva. He has not lost since fighting anderson silva and put up a dog fight against rampage. he has a rock jaw, a monster right hand, and top 3 wrestling in the ufc. Put him up against rashad in a contenders bout. It will be a good fight because rashad actually has footwork unlike bisping and so it won’t end in quick knockout by either side (dan henderson has a rock jaw). Look at what tito did to rashad. he outwrestled him. this would be a true test to rashad and an interesting fight that even dan couldn’t argue.

for middleweight let vitor fight nate marquardt in a number one contender bout. then there will be no bitching and whining. then later if dan wins against rashad and either wins or loses to lyoto then dan will have easily earned the right to fight anderson silva (saying silva doesn’t lose to either nate or vitor). Let silva fight Frank mir lol.

Silva will likely remain in our Middleweight rankings until his move is permanent.

ace franklin’s placement as the #6 LHW shows that fightmatrix’s ‘non-division specific’ idea is terribly flawed. i assume that if anderson silva’s 205 fight with griffin is a bust, he’ll still make his LHW ranking debut in the top 10. and that’s adsurd.

His shot at getting through the cluster of sick light heavies is as good as his shot against Anderson Silva
