JP Chihiro Suzuki at 6 with 12-4?

I think this is an error. Haggerty hasn’t fought MMA, the Andrade fight was a kickboxing match on a ONE card.

Any reason why K-1/Dream isn’t available on the pull-down filter in Featherweights or Bantamweights?

  6. TLC August 20, 2018 at 1:28 am Reply

    No, I did read it.

It, as I’ve said, is a horribly butchered version of ELO.

The most hilarious part of the whole system is that it complete craps all over consistency, which is huge in both ELO and in the rankings of anyone with an IQ over 90.

Usually consistency is a pretty big deal. It acts as a filter so guys like…oh I don’t know..Robert Peralta and Hiroyuki Takaya aren’t grossly overrated.

  7. cill August 20, 2018 at 1:28 am Reply

I suppose that does make sense! And that would explain why the point totals and featherweight and bantamweight are much lower than other divisions.

Definitely true. Too many guys have rose dramatically in your ranking just because they strung a bunch of wins against mediocre oppsition in the japanese organizations. Jorge Santiago was a perfect example. Also, look at all of these japanese fighters with pretty records and high rankings who come to the USA and get totally outclassed (often by lower ranked fighters).

The funny thing about people who post vitriolic nonsense like that is that they don’t even care about the answer to their question (or attack). They come here to post, all in a huff, mount their porous argument, then leave and never come back. Keyboard warriors are quite predictable, haven’t changed much since I got into MMA back in 2002.

    Big McGregor fan, eh?

We missed nothing, assume nothing, and there is no “thinking” involved in our rankings. Maybe read the FAQ one of these days? The rankings are generated by computer software based on official fight outcomes, fights in ANY weight class affects the fighter’s rating and ranking. Conor lost to Diaz, his rating decreased, and he lost his #1 spot.

Now if you want to talk opinions, I think we shouldn’t even be ranking him at featherweight. His last fight was at welterweight, next fight is at welterweight, I would take a wager than he never fights at 145 again.

    Tom, here’s a few names for you…

Yoshiro Maeda, Takeya Mizugaki, Hiroyuki Takaya,
Yoshihiro Akiyama and Michihiro Omigawa were all top ten when they came to Zuffa, and they’ve all flopped.

And let’s not forget Yuki Kondo, Hayato Sakurai and Caol Uno as three more overrated, underachieving japanese fighters.

Actually, Yushin Okami is the only Japanese fighter to ever have much success with Zuffa.

The adjustment can also be seen on sherdog.com if that helps.

Thought you might be interested, in case you were to do a category for fail.

  65. Chromium August 19, 2018 at 8:10 pm Reply

    @TholonansGhost
Takaya is 0-1, and to be fair Omigawa’s last fight was a total robbery. Also Maeda was never ranked in the Top 10 on Sherdog and was only ranked in the Top 10 in Fight Matrix after knocking out Charlie Valencia, which was fairly appropriate at the time.

I’ll agree Japanese fighters have historically underperformed in the UFC, that much is obvious.

Asian fighters are underrated on this site, not overrated. Hioki should be #2. So there’s going to be a special “asia modifier” where beating an asian opponent garners less points? LOL

Don’t forget all the asian fighters who got ROBBED when they come to the US.

I just took a peek at the ELO rankings- totally absurd and impossible to take seriously.

  72. jason August 19, 2018 at 8:10 pm Reply

Absolutely. Our rankings are division adjusted, not division specific. Featherweight is a much weaker division than Lightweight.

  73. jason August 19, 2018 at 8:10 pm Reply

If I had the time to review every controversial fight reported (not to mention video access), I would definitely consider some kind of small adjustment.

But alas, I have a job, and I can’t get every mid-level fight… so yeah, not gonna happen.

  74. TLC August 19, 2018 at 8:10 pm Reply

Hansen being top 20 is an absolute joke.

I do like how the system works though, Hansen beats two cans, and he suddenly ranks over guys that are contending for major titles and whatnot.

Meanwhile Sandro goes 17-2, with wins over guys that anyone with a functioning brain can determine are quality, Nick Denis and Kanehara to be specific, and is blow the guy.

The only thing worse than that is the system that automatically ranks a guy above the guy he beat, regardless of any scenarios surrounding it.

That’s not ELO, that’s not even close. That’s a heavily bastardizes and illogical version of ELO.

How websites can include this balderdash in a consensus rating system with guys like Peralta in the top 5 is beyond me. Talk about skewed data.

  75. ThonolansGhost August 19, 2018 at 8:10 pm Reply

I personally believe that there is plenty of room for improvement in this site’s rankings (both current and all-time)… That said, I’ve never seen anything better or even as good.

How do I get Nathan (Nate) Landwehr’s record updated on here? You have him as 5-2. He is currently 8-2.

That’s a good point.. I probably should move he and Nate on the next update. Then again, Conor still has the “title” here…. Makes total sense to move Nate, Conor I’m unsure about.

Ranking current fighters in multiple divisions simultaneously is probably never going to happen.

Two fights in a row in a division, almost always puts the fighter in that division.

Khabib is fighting at 160 next, which we consider LW.

Gotta first off give you guys credit on the overall quality of your rankings. I usually use this site first over any other site.

But very strange format I’m noticing especially with the current McGregor/Diaz situation. McGregor the FW Champ is no longer the#1 FW? Diaz is #5 WW and he never beat a true WW. Dave Branch is a 2 Division Champ and becomes unranked in one Division because he successfully defends his Title? I think Ranking fighters in multiple Divisions could solve this issue. But then again it doesn’t better me personally much.

Another example Khabib will fight next at WW but will go back to LW. Now he’ll be ranked at WW after next week. You see my point?

When the champ is ranked below the No.1 contender after losing a fight in another division, that’s when you know your ranking system is heavily flawed, fights in WW should have no effect on a division 2 classes below.

    Calo,

I believe a fighter takes their points with them when they change divisions. And if you’re moving to a lighter division, you get extra points. And if you’re moving to a weaker division and you win, you will move up in the rankings (regardless of who your latest opponent is).

Also, Guida is a serious threat to anyone at featherweight, with the obvious exceptions of Aldo and Edgar.

but you know, Hioki was no. 11 in your ranking before Guida fight. And Carpenter had a split decision with him, some people think Japanese won that matchup, so I thought he will be placed, maybe on 7th or 8th posision, and I thought that when a fighter moves to another division, the most important matter is the first fight on this division, and not points from his first weight class.

People said the same thing about Kawajiri and that argument had more legitimacy. Guida had more points than Hioki prior to the fight, won the fight, Hioki is a quality opponent and Guida moves into a weaker division. This is how he ends up #2.

After Edgar/Aldo, he will drop to #3, and in time he may drop more. Only time will tell.

As I’ve said dozens of times before, our rankings aren’t division-specific, they are division-adjusted.

    @TholonansGhost

LOL

  263. jason June 1, 2011 at 4:00 pm Reply

I think a moderate problem that I’m finally getting enough “proof” to see is that simply put, Asia is a weaker scene than the US… and maybe the rest of the world — that last part, I have yet to determine statistically. I think most of us knew that, but in order to factor something like that into the rankings, it must be done fairly.

I’m not sure how to do it, but I think I need to implement some kind of “community size” in the rating system that will not allow overseas fighters to become overrated, because it’s clear that is a potential issue.

  265. ThonolansGhost June 1, 2011 at 2:18 pm Reply

I personally believe that there is plenty of room for improvement in this site’s rankings (both current and all-time)… That said, I’ve never seen anything better or even as good.

  266. jason August 19, 2018 at 11:58 pm Reply

  267. Chromium May 29, 2011 at 6:41 pm Reply

ELO also mixes female and male rankings together, (leading to Cris Cyborg being the #15 FW in the World, right between Josh Grispi and Micah Miller), also still ranks Fedor Emelianenko as the #1 Heavyweight in the World (you know, after losing twice?), still ranks Josh Barnett at #3, has Ricco Rodriguez at #8, does not rank Brock Lesnar in the Top 25, and has someone I’ve never even heard of at #18 (Mike Martelle who is 15-2 with wins over no one I’ve ever heard of). Apparently keeping active is one of the top priorities for ELO, no matter who your opponent is. Which of course is why Rashad Evans is the top ranked LHW.

There’s a reason I can’t take ELO rankings seriously. Fight Matrix’s rankings aren’t perfect but at least if they have a strange rating is makes sense on some level and is explainable. I still have no idea what sort of formula ELO used to determine that Sarah Kaufman is the number 22 FW in the world… a weight she’s never fought at.

If you beat someone who is much higher ranked than you, you become much higher ranked. Sometimes in MMA, people prove they deserve to be ranked higher because they beat someone who is considered very good. How else would you have it?

The featherweight division is wide open as it is, with much more stratification of talent needed. Through battles like Takaya vs Peralta, we will see where people truly stand in the growing division.

  277. jason April 11, 2011 at 7:13 pm Reply

I’m not sure I see the issues you do.

Sandro holds no wins over the Top 10. He has a recent loss to Hioki, who is at #3.

Takaya holds wins over Fernandes and Hansen. He is above both of them. Peralta’s recent win propelled him over Takaya, by far the best opponent he’s ever beaten.

If you want to complain about something, complain about Hansen being above Bibiano, even thought it was only a split and Hansen has won 2 in a row..

The division is a giant mess at the top.

  278. TLC April 11, 2011 at 5:57 pm Reply

Furthermore, how Sandro managed to fall so heavily from losing to Hatsu freakin Hioki, who should be easily the number 2 FW in the world, while bum Takaya falls three spots for losing to a complete nobody boggles the mind.

The only thing funny about the whole thing is Takaya absolutely sucked to begin with and was ridiculously overrated for a guy who’s beaten no one but Bibano and has a pathetic win rate.

Peralta’s jump to 4 is laughable.

Big 15 record of 1-0, compared to guys with stellar records like Hominick and Nunes, and those guys aren’t even ranked.

Depends on how you look at it..

We’ve only been running for about 3 years, and we also haven’t been extended to Top 250+s for the entire time. Also, unranked fighters could have taken larger jumps.. and larger jumps could have been say.. 498 to 193.. (less impressive than Peralta’s jump to #4).

But, given the circumstances.. the answer is no. I think this is the 3rd largest jump since we started the site for an already ranked fighter. However, it is by far the largest jump to get into the Top 5.. 10.. 25 and even Top 100 for an already ranked fighter.

I really wish the system you used took into account horrible judging like the debacle of Sengoku’s tournament. Michihiro Omigawa should be deemed a fringe top 15, and certainly not above Marlon Sandro. What a gross call by Sengoku. I urge everyone to watch the fight and honestly say Marlon Sandro did not completely dominate Omigawa.

question. the dream 8 featherweight grand prix is set at a weight class of 139 and under. most of the participants will be under 139lbs. shouldn’t this make them all bantamweights in your ranking?

i’m mostly interested in where Yoshira Maeda should be. he fought in the WEC at bantam so I would lean toward putting him there.

chase beebe also fought at bantam for the WEC. if joe warren fights in the usa i see him at bantam due to him wrestling at 132lbs. atsushi yamamoto has fought most his career below 139lbs and i’m sure he weighed in lower than that for dream 7. please help with some insight.

    – Cruz is at Bantam
    – Bradstreet doesnt have enough quality wins, plus I think he may be ranked at 155 now.
    – McMahan is at Bantam
    – Din Thomas is in the rankings

Dominick Cruz (12-1) only loss was to Faber.
Olly Bradstreet (33-9) win over Steve Siler.
    Jared McMahan (11-0)

..and i guess Din Thomas and Gamburyan will be added soon.

Before asking where a specific fighter is ranked or why they aren't ranked:

- We update the rankings once per week, usually on Sunday or Monday.

- Fighters who have not fought in 450 days or more ARE NOT RANKED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

- Use the "Fighter Search" option in the upper-right of the page. The fighter may be ranked in a different division.

- Most of the divisions have multiple pages beyond this one. See the clickable ranges above and below the ranking table.

Furthermore, we do not maintain the "next fight" data. This is gathered from Sherdog. Any issues regarding this data should be forwarded to them.
