All Record, Little Substance

Posted on August 26, 2011 by Jason

Today, we look at active (fought in the last 360 days, debuted within the last 4 years), undefeated fighters (with at least 8 wins) who have made the least of their wins (and draws).

All fighters start with a rating of 10, so the following list is sorted in ascending order, by the least amount of points gained from an average fight — no contests excluded.

1. John Teixeira [10-0-1 | #469 Lightweight | +1.46 pts avg]

Leading the way, is a Brazilian Lightweight you’ve probably never heard of.  According to our records, 6 of his 11 opponents have been debuting fighters (one of which is where he recorded his lone draw).  He’s also fought two fighters, twice.  Brazilian record-keeping is notoriously bad, so he might not be getting the fairest shake here.

2. Micheal Kuiper [11-0-0 | #278 Middleweight | +1.75 pts avg]

Ironically, the UFC is currently scouting Kuiper.  Maybe a lack of local talent is the issue with his poor rating ascent.  He has never fought an opponent with a winning record that had more than 2 wins going into their fight.

3. Georgi Stoyanov [8-0-0 | #394 Lightweight | +2.33 pts avg]

Having 8 wins in less than 2 years, you can’t say he’s not active.  Still, in his 8th fight, he fought his first opponent with more than 5 fights (at 5-5-1 no less).

4. Khabib Nurmagomedov [14-0-0 | #179 Welterweight | +2.38 pts avg]

Riding the second-highest active undefeated streak, Nurmagomedov is actually doing a respectable job rising the rankings.  Though, when you’re still fighting 0-2 opponents in your 12th fight and a 1-1 guy in your 13th, it’s time to step up the competition.

5. Salvador Augusto Montano [9-0-0 | #146 Light Heavyweight | +2.52 pts avg]

I can’t dig on Montano too much, as most of his opponents actually have winning records, though Mexico City isn’t an MMA hot spot.  He recently went to Jungle Fight and scored a win.  Hey, I had to round out the list with a 5th guy, and here he is.

GSP moving toward the #2 All-Time ranking

Posted on August 25, 2011 by Jason

For those of you that don’t know, we maintain an All-Time Ranking which is usually updated in the first week of every month.

Recently, Anderson Silva took the #1 Absolute ranking from Fedor Emelianenko.  If recent trends continue, Georges St. Pierre should take over the #2 spot, pushing Fedor down to #3.  GSP recently secured the #1 Welterweight position from Matt Hughes and will likely lock that down for quite some time as he continues his divisional title reign.

In addition, GSP has the most dominant monthly period of all-time also, though fluctuations and changes in data cause this ranking to shift between he and Anderson Silva.

With respect to other current fighters on the Absolute list, I fully expect Dan Henderson to rise up and possibly challenge for a Top 5 spot.  As discussed within the All-Time rankings page, these are career-long and are very slow in reacting to recent activity.

As Diaz/GSP approaches, we should recognize that every time we see GSP and Anderson Silva in the octagon, we are watching two of the very greatest in the sport’s history.

With the sport still in it’s infancy and growing at an unprecedented pace, it’s clear that the greatest fighters of today are also the greatest of all time.  Aided by a custom-engineered MMA training program such as GSP’s RushFit, the modern champions are on a level above and beyond the top fighters of yester-year.   What will be the next level of MMA evolution, and will St. Pierre’s and Silva’s accomplishments be eclipsed by the next generation of young fighters?

Ranking ‘The Ultimate Fighter 14’ Contestants

Posted on August 23, 2011 by Oleg

Season 14 of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ will feature featherweight and bantamweight fighters.  Sixteen fighters have been announced for each division, though only eight per weight class will make it into the ‘TUF’ house after a round of elimination bouts.

As these divisions are not yet fully established in the UFC, the average ranking of contestants going into the show is somewhat higher than we’ve seen in the previous seasons.

A preliminary ranking of ‘The Ultimate Fighter 14’  follows:

Featherweights

[#30] Micah Miller

[#91 LW] Eric Marriott

[#58] Steven Siler

[#27 BW] Jimmie Rivera

‘Undefeated Fighters’ Filter

Posted on August 19, 2011 by Oleg

We’ve added a very minor new feature to our standard ranking pages: You can now filter the ranking list to only show undefeated fighters.
For example, here are all currently ranked undefeated Heavyweights:

http://www.fightmatrix.com/mma-ranks/heavyweight-265-lbs/?OrgFilter=&NatFilter=&chkUndef=on

Or how about undefeated heavyweights whose last fight was in the UFC:

http://www.fightmatrix.com/mma-ranks/heavyweight-265-lbs/?OrgFilter=UFC&NatFilter=&chkUndef=on

Finally, how about undefeated American heavyweights?

Top Ranked Fighters – Where’d Ya Go?

Posted on August 19, 2011 by Jason

Occasionally, I’ll see fighters who are known contenders, or who are about to hit the elite level, that then suddenly vanish from the scene.  In this list, we’ll take a look at a few of those fighters.  Maybe our readers can provide some more info.

Just a sidenote, I have excluded women from the rankings as they are much more likely to leave for family/pregnancy reasons.

Fighter – (Ranking Prior to Inactivity Decay – Quarterly Ranking Date)

Daniel Otero – (#3 Flyweight – July 2009)

Otero appeared as if he was going to be the true pioneer for a non-Asian Flyweight circuit, but last fought in July 2008.  His only loss was via DQ to Masatoshi Abe, a then, top-ranked Shooto Flyweight.  Last I heard, he suffered an ACL injury, but it has been over 3 years since his last fight.  He was riding a 2-fight win streak, with those coming over respectable midwest US little men, Sam Thao, and Josh Rave.

Mizuto Hirota – (#11 Lightweight – October 2010)

Some would argue that this was a high ranking, but Hirota was on a pretty decent run in the Japanese scene prior to getting his arm snapped in half by Shinya Aoki.  That’s probably the reason he’s been so inactive.

Ray Mercer – (#13 Heavyweight – April 2010)

Oh Ray, how the MMA world barely knew you.  We loved you for knocking Tim Sylvia flat on his ass, but we hated you for being 48 years old and not having any previous MMA fights.  Ray actually started out with a lower ranking, but rose due to attrition.

Ricardo Arona – (#18 Light Heavyweight- July 2010)

Am I the only one sick of seeing him on lists like these?  Probably one of the very best in MMA history to never win a major championship.

Heath Herring – (#20 Heavyweight – October 2010)

It’s been three years now, and I’m still waiting for Heath to co-star in a Steven Seagal direct-to-DVD movie.  Getting your ass kicked by a 1-1 guy straight from the WWE had to have an impact on Herring’s confidence, but Lesnar did go on quite a run after that.  Still, at only 33, it is not too late for a comeback.

Phil “Billy” Harris – (#23 Flyweight – April 2011)

It’s rare enough to see a ranked Flyweight outside of Japan, but one from the UK?  Unless you are in the UK, you have probably never seen his name unless you religiously look at our rankings.  Harris fought most of his career at Featherweight and even had at least one fight at Welterweight.  He actually just left the ranking last week, so it may be too soon for this list.  Still, he added something unique to the Flyweight ranks.

Other fighters worth researching: Will Ribeiro, Josh Ferguson, Dokonjonosuke Mishima, Pat Runez

Rankings displayed are from the quarterly generated ranking sets, before the inactivity penalties started being assessed (when possible).

This Past Weekend: Strikeforce – Challengers 18

Posted on August 17, 2011 by Jonathan

Strikeforce – Challengers 18
August 12, 2011
Palms Casino Resort,
Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

Main Card (Aired on Showtime)

Lightweight (155 lbs)

Joe Duarte (10 – 2 – 0) defeated Jorge Gurgel (14 – 9 – 0) by unanimous decision.  Duarte, who is on a 5 fight win streak (4 by stoppage), surges 121 spots up the ranks from [#308] to [#187].  Duarte should face either [#108] Caros Fodor or [#103] Milton Vieira next.  Gurgel, who is 2-3 since washing out of the UFC in 2008, plunges 81 spots down the ranks from [#208] to [#289].  Gurgel could face [#218] James Terry in his next outing.

Middleweight (185 lbs)

Nate James (13 – 7 – 1) defeated Danillo Villefort (13 – 4 – 0) by unanimous decision.  James, who is on a 5 fight win streak (4 by stoppage), moves from [#91LHW] into the middleweight “Top 350” at [#27].  He should look for a bout against [#23] Anthony Smith next.  Villefort, who was on a 4 fight winning streak prior to this loss, moves 8 spots down the ranks from [#22] to [#30].  Perhaps Villefort vs. [#19] Robbie Lawler could work, since both are coming off of losses (2 losses in Lawler’s case).

Lightweight (155 lbs)

Pat Healy (25 – 16 – 0) defeated Eric Wisely  (18 – 6 – 0) by unanimous decision.  Healy, who has back to back wins after this bout (5-1 in his last 6),  jumps 16 spots up the ranks from [#42] to [#26].  Healy vs. [#30] Justin Wilcox would be an informative fight in relation to where each man belongs atop the Strikeforce lightweight division.  Wisely, who was on a 4 fight win streak prior to this loss, falls 28 spots down the ranks from [#49] to [#77].  Wisely is undersized for the division, and should look to face [#9FW] Robert Peralta at featherweight.  If he decides to stay at 155, he could face [#96] Magno Almeida.

Women’s Featherweight (145 lbs)

Ronda Rousey  (3 – 0 – 0) defeated Sarah D’Alelio (4 – 2 – 0) by technical submission due to an armbar at 0:25 of the 1st round.  Rousey, who has rattled off 3 consecutive armbar victories (all under 50 seconds), enters the women’s featherweight “Top 15” at [#8].  She should look to face another up and comer in [#9] Julia Budd next.  If she wins that, Rousey may be ready for a title shot.  D’Alelio, who is on a 2 fight losing streak, remains unranked.  D’Alelio may want to think about fighting her next bout at women’s bantamweight (135 lbs).

Middleweight (185 lbs)

Derrick Mehmen (12 – 3 – 0) defeated Roy Jones (6 – 2 – 0) by unanimous decision.  Mehmen, who has back to back wins after this bout (4-1 in his last 5),  moves from [#85HW] into the light heavyweight “Top 250” at [#80].  He should face [#100] Trevor Smith for his next opponent.  Jones, who is 1-2 in his last 3 (prior to which he won 5 first round stoppages in a row), remains unranked.  Despite his loss, Jones looked impressive on the feet in the 1st round, and should be given another opportunity inside the Strikeforce cage, perhaps against [#166] Ron “Abongo” Humphrey in what would be a guaranteed slugfest.
