You may have seen this week’s post regarding Brian Cobb and his fight on Friday. If you haven’t, click here. Furthermore, if you’ve been here a while, you’ve likely noticed his name being ranked toward the top of the Lightweight division — something you won’t see on other ranking sites.
Friday will do a whole bunch to determine whether or not that ranking is complete legit or even in the ballpark. We got a hold of Brian to ask him a few questions regarding FightMatrix and his fight on Friday.
FM: There are a lot of MMA ranking sites out there, though the FightMatrix system has been giving you the most praise over the past year or so, consistently ranking you right outside the Top 10. Do you follow your rank on our site and do you consider this an accurate ranking for yourself in the Lightweight division?
Cobb: I definitely follow the FightMatrix rankings. It is the only ranking website that I have bookmarked on my computer. I firmly believe rankings don’t help you win fights, that is why they have the fighters actually fight, but it is really nice to get so much respect from FightMatrix for my past few wins. I think their rankings are accurate because I feel like I can hang with anyone in the world for three to five rounds. It seems that people who do not consider me worthy of being in the top 10 do not acknowledge the people I have fought or believe it is unjustified because I am not currently in the UFC
FM: Have you or your team ever used the site to scout out potential opponents?
Cobb: Every fighter I know uses FightMatrix.com to scout opponents. It is such a thorough database, it is hard not to rely on it for help.
FM: Before your current win streak, you lost two in a row. What do you attribute these losses to and how have you turned things around?
Cobb: My two losses were short notice fights and lack of proper preparation for those opponents. I feel with the right camp and appropriate timetable to prepare and gameplan for an opponent will always put me in an ideal situation to come out the victor. I no longer accept short notice fights.
FM: Even though McKee is nearly 42, he’s one of your toughest opponents to date. Do you think the ranking sites will give you more of a fair shake if you take the victory?
Cobb: I think I will get more of a fair shake with a win over McKee. Although he is almost 42, he has only lost one fight in 8 years. It is hard to argue with results.
You can catch Brian’s fight, along with a few others, on HDNet, this Friday night. If you need more info on the card, look no further than our FightMatrix Program: MFC 32.
