The Five Clauses That Void Winnings (and How to Find Them in Ten Minutes)

Posted on October 30, 2026 by A. J. Riot

A player deposits €50, takes a 100% bonus, clears the wagering over three evenings, and requests €2,400. The withdrawal sits in review for four days. Then the balance drops to zero and an email arrives citing a section number. Somewhere in the session history there is a single spin at €6.00 against a €5.00 stake cap. Not a pattern. One spin, probably a mis-click on the stake slider. The bonus is void, and everything won from it goes with it.

Nothing about that is a scam, although it can feel like it. The cap was in the terms, the player accepted the terms, and the check ran automatically. The document did what it said it would do. Terms are not marketing; they are the contract governing your money, and five clauses do almost all of the voiding.

1. Maximum bet during bonus play

Typical wording: “the maximum stake allowed, including bonus buys and side bets, cannot exceed €5 while wagering requirements are active.”

The mechanism is a breach test, not a proportionality test. There is no threshold for how often or how far you exceeded the cap. One qualifying stake while a wagering requirement is live makes the bonus voidable, and because bonus funds and winnings are treated as one pot, the winnings go too. Enforcement is a query at withdrawal review: the system pulls every stake logged during the bonus period and flags the maximum. Nobody has to notice you at the time. Players usually trip it on features they do not think of as stakes — a bonus buy at 100x the base bet, a doubled bet after a loss, an ante or side bet that lifts total stake over the line.

Check before depositing: the number itself (€5 is common, €2 and €4 exist), whether bonus buys are permitted at all, and whether the cap applies to total stake including side bets or only the base bet.

2. Low-risk and hedge betting

Typical wording: winnings may be voided where the operator identifies “low-risk betting strategies” — covering most numbers on a roulette table, opposite bets on even-money markets, or grinding minimum stakes on high-RTP games to clear wagering with minimal variance.

The mechanism here is different, and worse for the player: the definition belongs to the operator, and it is applied after the fact. Nothing warns you mid-session. You clear the wagering, request a withdrawal, and a reviewer decides retroactively whether your play was “genuine”. Covering 30 of 37 roulette numbers is an obvious case. Flat-betting a 97% RTP slot for the whole wagering run is a judgement call, and the judgement is made by the party that pays out.

This clause appears at a striking share of offshore casinos, frequently word-for-word across every brand in an operator family — a shared template, not an individual risk team’s work. A handful of review databases now quote the exact clause with its section number per casino — lotsacasinos.com files them under each review as documented concerns — which turns ten minutes of Ctrl+F into thirty seconds of reading.

Check before depositing: whether the clause exists at all, and whether it lists examples or leaves the standard undefined. An undefined standard is the one that can reach your session.

3. Inactivity and dormancy fees

Typical wording: an account with no deposit or login for six months (180 days) is declared inactive, and a monthly administration fee is deducted from the remaining balance until the balance reaches zero.

This one does not void a win. It eats one. The mechanism is a scheduled deduction against real, withdrawable money — not bonus funds — and it runs silently. Leave €180 sitting after a good night, forget the account, come back a year later, and you find a zero balance and a ledger of monthly charges. Fees of €5 to €10 a month are typical; some operators confiscate the whole balance after a longer period.

Check before depositing: the trigger period, what resets it (a login may or may not count — often only a deposit does), and the fee amount. Then withdraw your balance rather than parking it.

4. VPN and location clauses

Typical wording: use of a VPN, proxy or any tool that misrepresents your location is grounds to void winnings, close the account, and forfeit the balance.

The enforcement point is KYC, which happens at withdrawal — after the win, not before the deposits. Verification pulls your IP history across the account’s whole lifetime and compares it to the address on your ID. A VPN left running for streaming, on days you happened to play, produces a mismatch. The clause does not require intent.

The same section usually carries a second trap: registration from a jurisdiction the casino’s own terms exclude. Deposits from an excluded country are accepted for months without comment, because payment processing and compliance review are separate systems. The clause surfaces only when you ask for money back, and the standard resolution returns deposits at best.

Check before depositing: the restricted-country list (usually a long block near the end), and turn the VPN off for anything involving a gambling account.

5. Win caps

Two different caps hide under similar language, and confusing them is expensive.

A bonus win cap limits what a bonus can pay: “winnings derived from the bonus are capped at 10x the bonus amount.” A €50 bonus that runs to €3,000 pays only €500, and the rest is removed at checkout.

A free-spin cap limits a batch of spins: “maximum winnings from free spins are €100.” This applies regardless of what the spins hit. A jackpot line on a no-deposit spin batch pays the ceiling, typically €50 to €200.

The mechanism is a ceiling applied at the moment bonus funds convert to cash. The detail worth checking is whether the cap survives that conversion — at some operators it does, meaning money that has already become withdrawable is still trimmed to the cap at withdrawal review.

Check before depositing: the multiple, the free-spin ceiling in currency, and whether the cap lapses once wagering is complete.

The ten-minute method

Open the terms document and use Ctrl+F. Five searches:

  • “maximum bet” / “max bet” / “stake”
  • “low-risk” / “strategy” / “irregular”
  • “inactive” / “dormant”
  • “VPN” / “proxy” / “restricted”
  • “maximum win” / “capped” / “maximum payout”

Read the paragraph around each hit and note the numbers. Ten minutes against the document beats an hour on the promotions page, because the promotions page is not the contract.

The meta-point matters more than any single clause. These terms are legal, disclosed and generally enforceable — regulators do push back on the worst of them, and the UK Gambling Commission’s guidance on fair and transparent terms explicitly targets voiding real-money winnings over inadvertent staking breaches. But that guidance binds licensed operators in one market. Everywhere else, the casino’s defence in a dispute is the same sentence every time: it was in the terms. Your only defence is having read them first.
