#5 – #4
#5 – Dan Severn (Rep Avg: #63.3 | Fight Matrix: #120)
Nostalgia is respectable, but it doesn’t necessarily equate to super stardom. While 101 wins is nothing to downplay, the last 90 wins or so were of far lesser quality than the first 10. In some ways it is like Severn gave up the high profile fights and was then OK with mediocrity.
#4 – Jon Jones (Rep Avg: #3.0 | Fight Matrix: #6)
The initial math that determines the valuation in this article is up for debate here, but given that this is by far the highest profile ranking in this study, we’re left with the difference of 3 positions and the #4 overrated spot for Jones. It is the difference between the MMA Mount Rushmore and just being outside of the Top 5. On one hand, we’re splitting hairs. On the other, we’ve doubled the rank number between the rep average and the Fight Matrix ranking. I don’t see Jones above Fedor, GSP, or Silva. So, #4 is best case from my subjective opinion. With Jones in hiatus and Aldo still a dominant #1, #5 seems a reasonable compromise, but Matt Hughes has something to say about that in the Fight Matrix world.
