The Ultimate Fighter 14, Episode 5 Review
In the fifth episode, Team Bisping finally put one up on the scoreboard when [#82 FW] Hamid ‘Akira’ Corassani defeated [NR] Dustin Neace by majority decision in a closely contested bout. The win was not without controversy, as Akira appeared to be tapping out when he was caught in a leg lock by Neace in the first round; however the referee didn’t call the submission and Corassani was able to escape the hold, proceeding to drop Dustin with a punch in the second round and narrowly taking the decision.
The current win tally is Team Miller 4, Team Bisping 1.

Bantamweights after the jump:
“Keep an Eye Out For…” Edinaldo Oliveira
[#48HW] Edinaldo Oliveira (12 – 0 – 1) has yet to taste defeat. At 6’7″ and 238lbs, he is a very lanky fighter that has used his reach to secure 7 (T)KOs and 2 submissions out of his 12 victories. In the past 17 months, Oliveira has amassed a formidable list of victories over Brazilian heavyweights. The most notable victories in this time span are:
- 1st round TKO over [#151HW] Jair Goncalves (9 – 4 – 0) in September 2011
- 3rd round unanimous decision over [#167HW] Ubiratan Marinho Lima (13 – 6 – 0) in July 2011
- 2nd round TKO over [#230HW] Edson Franca (13 – 6 – 0) in May 2011
- 1st round TKO over [#192HW] Geronimo dos Santos (24 – 13 – 0) in December 2010
- 5th round unanimous decision over the one man to defeat [#3HW] Junior dos Santos, [#139HW] Joaquim Ferreira (11 – 6 – 0) in May 2010
Oliveira’s nickname is “Lula Molusco” or “Squidward” in English, due to his rangy physique. If he were so inclined, Oliveira could possibly fight at 205lbs. It would be interesting to see how Lula Molusco would fare against greater competition on bigger shows. Here’s to hoping we get the opportunity.
What a UFC Flyweight Tournament might look like
Using the rating system and a relatively unscientific methodology to qualify fighters, this is what a eight-man UFC Flyweight tournament may look like, with two alternate bouts.
To qualify, fighters must fulfill one of the following:
- At least one true Flyweight bout in the last three years AND at least one bout in the US in the last 18 months OR a scheduled bout in the US on Sherdog.
- At least two bouts in the US in the last three years, where the fighter weighed in at or below 134.0. The idea here, is that they either fought a catchweight between Flyweight and Bantamweight, or have no issue making Bantamweight.
I have also excluded Dominick Cruz from consideration, as he is the current champion at Bantamweight.
All ratings were also converted to Flyweight ratings for seeding purposes.
#1/#8 -> [#2 BW] Joseph Benavidez (15-2-0) vs. [#48 BW] Darren Uyenoyama (6-3-0)
#2/#7 -> [#6 BW] Alexis Vila (10-0-0) vs. [#3] Jussier da Silva (10-1-0)
#3/#6 -> [#11 BW] Demetrious Johnson (9-2-0) vs. [#2] Ian McCall (11-2-0)
#4/#5 -> [#15 BW] Takeya Mizugaki (15-6-2) vs. [#22 BW] Eduardo Dantas (11-2-0)
Alt #1 -> [#6] Mamoru Yamaguchi (26-6-3) vs. [#61 BW] Mike Easton (10-1-0)
Alt #2 -> [#7] Josh Rave (22-8-0) vs. [#59 BW] Frank Baca (9-1-0)
Apologies if I missed anyone — I absolutely do not have all weigh-in information for all events. When it boils down to it though, who knows when the UFC will add the division and who really knows who is willing to and CAN move down to 125 pounds?
The really shocking part is how weak the Flyweight division is in comparison to Bantamweight. Let’s hope that the UFC kicks the division off with at least four fights, or else the Flyweight rankings here will be a fluctuating mess for some time.
