Why MMA Underdogs Are Harder to Price Than Underdogs in Team Sports

Posted on August 27, 2026 by A. J. Riot

An underdog is expected to lose. That is why the odds offer a bigger return if they win. But setting the right odds can be difficult.

Football, basketball, and other team sports provide huge amounts of data. MMA fighters compete far less often. A single punch can also end a fight that seemed to be going in one direction. For these reasons, pricing an MMA underdog can involve much more uncertainty.

A Fighter’s Style Can Change Everything

Imagine Fighter A has strong boxing and has won four fights in a row. That sounds impressive. Now Fighter A is matched against someone with excellent wrestling. Suddenly, those four previous victories may become less useful. Perhaps none of the previous opponents could wrestle well.

This is the classic MMA question of styles making fights. A fighter does not need to be better everywhere. An underdog may only need one skill that creates a serious problem for the favourite.

Strengths Can Attack Specific Weaknesses

Consider a powerful striker who struggles to defend takedowns. Against another striker, that weakness may never become important. Put that fighter against a strong wrestler, and the fight can be very different.

The underdog may still win, even if the favourite has a better record. Team sports have tactical matchups too. The difference is that teams have several players who can adjust and cover weaknesses. An MMA fighter stands alone.

One Person Carries the Entire Result

If a football player has a poor match, ten teammates are still on the field. Basketball works in a similar way. A star player can struggle, while another player scores 30 points and saves the team. MMA offers no such protection.

One fighter is responsible for every attack, mistake, defensive move, and decision. A bad reaction can end the contest. So can poor balance, one failed takedown, or a moment of lost focus. That makes individual performance far more important.

Finishes Add Another Level of Uncertainty

MMA fights do not always develop slowly. One clean punch can end everything. A submission can appear within seconds after one mistake on the ground. Even a fighter who is losing can still win before the fight ends. This gives certain underdogs a dangerous path to victory.

Power Can Keep an Underdog Alive

Suppose an underdog is expected to lose most striking exchanges. The favourite is faster, more accurate, and more technical. But the underdog has serious knockout power. The favourite might win nine exchanges out of ten. The problem is that exchange number ten could end the fight. That possibility has to be considered when setting odds during online futsal betting for comparison. It does not mean knockout power makes someone a good bet. It simply adds uncertainty to the price.

Injuries Are Difficult to Measure

Every sport has injuries. MMA creates an unusual problem because fighters may enter the cage carrying injuries that the public knows little about. Training camps are demanding.

Fighters wrestle, spar, lift weights, and practice submissions. Small injuries can happen throughout camp. Some injuries become public. Others do not. A fighter may still compete with a damaged hand, sore knee, or another problem that limits certain movements. In a team sport, an injured player might be replaced. In MMA, the injured fighter is still half of the entire contest.

Long Breaks Create More Questions

Suppose a fighter has not competed for 18 months. What happened during that time? Maybe the fighter improved. A long break can provide time to develop wrestling, improve striking, or recover from previous damage. There is another possibility.

The fighter may have been dealing with injuries. Timing could be worse. Fitness might have changed. Until the fight begins, some of these questions have no clear answer.

Weight Cuts Can Affect the Picture

The official weigh-in can sometimes change how people view a fight. A fighter may struggle to make the required weight. Another may miss weight completely. A difficult cut can raise questions about energy and preparation.

Yet appearance alone does not provide a clear answer. Someone who looks tired at the weigh-in may recover well before the fight. For an underdog, a poor weight cut by the favourite can make the matchup look more interesting. But there is no simple formula for measuring exactly how much it matters.

MMA Markets Have to Price Many Possible Outcomes

A team can win a football match in many ways, but the basic structure remains familiar. MMA has several very different paths to victory. A fighter can win by knockout, submission, or decision. The fight can take place mostly on the feet, against the cage, or on the ground.

An underdog might have little chance of winning a decision but a real chance of finding a submission. Another may have almost no grappling advantage but enough punching power to create a knockout threat. Setting one moneyline price means putting all those possibilities into a single number.

Underdog Does Not Mean Mispriced

There is one important point to remember. An underdog is not automatically a good betting opportunity. Sometimes the favourite really does have major advantages. Better striking, wrestling, cardio, experience, and recent form can all point in the same direction.

The difficulty comes from deciding whether the odds correctly reflect those advantages. A fighter priced as a large underdog may deserve that price. Another may have a style that gives the favourite more trouble than the odds suggest. Finding the difference is the hard part.
