Ukrainian Defender Anton Burlaka Accepts a Short-Notice Challenge at a Professional BJJ Event

Posted on June 29, 2026 by Nicolas Grant

Ukrainian serviceman and defender Anton Burlaka once again demonstrated that true character is forged not only on the battlefield but also on the mats. Despite suffering a severe combat injury during the war in Ukraine, Anton continues to balance military service with his athletic career, inspiring both his fellow soldiers and the martial arts community.

Anton stepped in on short notice to compete in the opening super fight of a professional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu event organized by BJJ Chernigov Team with the support of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine (HUR) and the elite special unit Artan.

Burlaka accepted the challenge against the highly decorated Azamat Boziev, who currently represents Senshi no Kage in France while also being a representative of Renzo Gracie Israel, where he trains under the guidance of Professor Haim Gozali, a 6th Degree BJJ Black Belt.

Anton represents ZR Team Kyiv Honey Badger, where he trains under Professor Dmytro Bezugliy, a 1st Degree BJJ Black Belt.

Before dedicating himself to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Anton established an impressive competitive record in hand-to-hand combat, becoming a multiple-time champion and medalist in national tournaments. Stepping into a professional submission-only match against such an experienced opponent on short notice presented an entirely new challenge.

The bout was contested under submission-only rules, meaning victory could only be achieved by forcing an opponent to submit. Anton successfully defended Boziev’s initial submission attempts and showed remarkable composure throughout the early stages of the match. However, Boziev’s world-class experience eventually proved decisive. One of his later submission attacks resulted in a perfectly executed armbar, forcing the stoppage and securing the victory.

Although the result favored Boziev, Anton Burlaka’s performance earned widespread respect. Accepting a professional super fight on short notice against a highly accomplished international competitor while continuing to serve Ukraine after sustaining a serious wartime injury is a testament to his resilience, courage, and unwavering fighting spirit.

More than just the opening match of the evening, this super fight became a symbol of determination and perseverance, reminding everyone in attendance that true strength is measured not only by victories but also by the willingness to face the toughest challenges—both on the battlefield and on the competition mats.
