What is “obstructing the field” in cricket?

Posted on April 3, 2026 by A. J. Riot

In cricket, “obstructing the field” is one of the rarest and most unusual methods by which a batter can be dismissed. It is defined under Law 37 of the Laws of Cricket and applies when a batter deliberately interferes with the fielding side’s attempt to complete a play. Remember that the 1xBet app can also be used in both Android and iOS to bet, among other things, on how a batter is going to be dismissed.

At its core, the rule is based on intent. A batter can only be given out if they willfully attempt to obstruct or distract the fielding team, either through physical actions or even verbal interference. Accidental contact or unintentional obstruction does not count, and the final decision rests with the umpire. The app from 1xBet is available for the 2 most popular ecosystems, which are Android and iOS, and over there, you can also find a full-fledged cricket section too.

There are several common scenarios in which this dismissal may occur. The 1st example is when a batter, fearing a run-out, deliberately changes their running line to block a throw aimed at the stumps. Another occurs when a batter uses their bat or body to prevent a fielder from taking a catch. In such cases, the obstruction must clearly be intentional rather than incidental.

Other situations where this occurrence can happen

A further situation involves handling the ball. If a batter touches the ball with a hand not holding the bat, without permission from the fielding side, they can be given out. Previously, this was coded as a 2nd, separate mode of dismissal known as “handled the ball,” but it is now included under obstructing the field. Everything that happens during a cricket match is available at the various 1xBet login mobile platforms, which you can also enjoy today.

Importantly, the law also clarifies what does not count as obstruction. If a batter is simply running between the wickets and is struck by the ball unintentionally, they are not out. Similarly, actions taken to avoid injury are exempt. The key factor remains whether the act was deliberate.

When a batter is dismissed in this way, the bowler does not receive credit for the wicket. Any runs completed before the obstruction are usually counted, unless the act prevented a catch, in which case those runs may be disallowed.

As it can be seen, “obstructing the field” reflects cricket’s emphasis on 3 aspects:

  • fairness
  • sportsmanship
  • and respect for the rules

And speaking about the rules of the sport, you can try to login the mobile 1xBet platform and the many bets available on its cricket section too.

While rare, it ensures that batters do not unfairly interfere with the fielding side’s efforts, preserving the integrity of the game.
