Orlistat takes a different approach to weight loss from medicines that act on appetite. Instead, it works inside the digestive system. The drug inhibits gastrointestinal lipases, the enzymes that break down dietary fat so the body can absorb it. With the 60mg dose, around a quarter of the fat eaten can pass through the digestive system without being absorbed. Research describes absorption being reduced by approximately 25% at this dose (Anderson, 2007).
Curely is a UK-registered and regulated online pharmacy and medical clinic headquartered in Glasgow, and it offers the branded 60mg form of orlistat under the Alli name. The pharmacy lists Alli for adults with a BMI of 28 or above and provides it without a prescription following appropriate pharmacy screening. Curely also supplies prescription weight-management treatments, including GLP-1 medicines, but Alli occupies a distinct position in its range because it works locally in the digestive system and contains no caffeine or other stimulants.
Orlistat Targets Dietary Fat Rather Than Appetite
Orlistat’s mechanism matters because it sets realistic expectations about the treatment. Taking a capsule does not directly burn stored body fat, nor does Alli suppress appetite. Orlistat attaches to digestive lipases and reduces their ability to break down some of the fat in a meal. The body then passes the unabsorbed fat in stools.
Clinical research supports this mechanism. Anderson et al. (2006) conducted a 16-week randomised, double-blind trial involving 391 overweight adults. Participants received either 60mg orlistat three times daily or a placebo while following a reduced-calorie diet. The orlistat group lost an average of 3.05kg, compared with 1.90kg in the placebo group. Among participants who completed the study, the respective reductions were 4.8% and 3.1% of their starting body weight.
Those figures also highlight an important point: Alli supplements dietary changes rather than replacing them. Both groups lost weight during the study because both followed a calorie-reduced diet. Orlistat produced an additional effect.
Curely’s alli weight loss pills are prescribed for use alongside a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet. This advice relates directly to how the drug works, rather than simply offering a general recommendation for healthier eating.
Research Shows Effects Beyond the Number on the Scale
Body weight tells only part of the story. In combat sports, followers regularly see how the same number on a scale can represent very different physiques. Clinical researchers have similarly examined how 60mg orlistat affects fat distribution rather than total weight alone.
A 24-week randomised controlled trial involving 131 participants examined visceral adipose tissue, the fat stored around internal organs. Participants taking 60mg orlistat reduced visceral fat by 15.7%, compared with 9.4% among those taking a placebo. The orlistat group also lost more total body weight, with average losses of 5.93kg versus 3.94kg (Smith et al., 2011).
Another randomised study of 200 Japanese participants reported significantly greater reductions in visceral fat area, waist circumference and body weight with 60mg orlistat than with placebo after 24 weeks. Both groups also received advice about diet and exercise.
Researchers have examined cardiovascular markers too. In the Anderson et al. (2006) trial, LDL cholesterol fell by 7.2% in the orlistat group, compared with 0.6% in the placebo group. Orlistat also reduced total cholesterol and blood pressure more than placebo. These results reflect averages from controlled studies and don’t predict what an individual user will experience.
The Side Effects Follow the Same Mechanism
The way orlistat works also explains its most common drawbacks. Fat that the body does not absorb still has to leave the digestive tract. As a result, users may experience oily spotting, fatty stools, bowel urgency, increased bowel movements, or gas accompanied by discharge.
Researchers have consistently linked these gastrointestinal effects to orlistat. The 16-week Anderson study recorded significantly more gastrointestinal events among participants taking the medicine. A separate 24-week trial also reported defecation-related effects such as oily spotting and flatus with discharge, although most reactions were mild.
Diet therefore affects more than weight-loss results. Eating high-fat meals while taking Alli can make gastrointestinal effects more noticeable. A review of the 60mg dose found that these effects were reduced when people kept fat below 30% of their total energy intake (Anderson, 2007).
This relationship can encourage people to pay closer attention to the fat content of meals, but it also means Alli will not suit everyone. Pharmacy screening remains important even though the medicine does not require a prescription.
Curely Provides Alli Through a Regulated Pharmacy Model
Curely places Alli within a broader clinical weight-management service rather than presenting it as a standalone supplement. The company states that it sources medications from regulated UK-authorised distributors and uses registered pharmacists and doctors to oversee its services.
For Alli, Curely offers one-, two- and three-month pack sizes and lists the starting price as £45.99. Customers complete screening to establish suitability, including whether they meet the BMI requirement.
The company’s wider weight-management range includes Mounjaro, Wegovy and prescription orlistat. Curely also operates online services covering men’s health, women’s health, dermatology, sexual health, travel health and general wellness.
Company-supplied figures indicate that Curely has generated approximately £5 million in trailing 12-month revenue, with monthly revenue reaching about £1 million at a November peak. Its reported average order value is around £140, while its website conversion rate stands at roughly 4%. These figures describe Curely’s own reported performance rather than independently verified market-share statistics.
Where Alli Fits Into Weight Management
Weight carries particular significance in combat sports, but medically managed weight loss and a fighter’s short-term weight cut are very different things. Alli is designed for eligible overweight adults pursuing longer-term weight management alongside dietary changes. It should not be viewed as a tool for rapid dehydration, making a competition weight class, or producing immediate changes before a weigh-in.
For its intended users, the evidence paints a more measured picture. Orlistat 60mg reduces the absorption of some dietary fat and can produce additional weight loss when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet. Studies also report changes in visceral fat and several cardiovascular risk markers, while gastrointestinal effects remain the medicine’s most characteristic drawback.
Curely provides access to Alli through a regulated UK pharmacy alongside other weight-management options. In a field increasingly dominated by discussion of injectable medicines, Alli remains a distinctly different treatment: an oral, non-stimulant drug with a mechanism researchers have studied for decades.
