Will Tonali Fix Spurs’s Weak Midfield?

Spurs are staring down the barrel of an unthinkable relegation scrap in the closing weeks of the 2026 season, a sentence that feels entirely surreal to type out loud given the sheer revenue machine operating in North London. The managerial revolving door has spun from Thomas Frank to Igor Tudor and now rests on Roberto De Zerbi, yet none of them have managed to solve the absolute void of competence sitting right in the center of the pitch.

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski spending the entire year cooped up in the medical room certainly hasn’t helped matters, but the absolute lack of technical stability from the healthy options has turned their weekly outings into an exercise in pure structural masochism.

Every sequence looks entirely labored, a painful display of sideways passing and hesitation that leaves the back line exposed and the forwards completely starved of service.

The Problem Right Now

Jamie Carragher was entirely correct when he pointed out that mid-table outfits and fellow relegation strugglers have far more cohesive midfield pairings than what is currently trotting out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The early-season experiment of pairing Joao Palhinha with Rodrigo Bentancur provided a brief illusion of solidity during a UEFA Super Cup penalty shootout loss, but it quickly dissolved into a sterile partnership completely incapable of pushing the ball forward or breaking defensive lines. Conor Gallagher arrived from Atletico Madrid in January for a hefty fee but has looked entirely anonymous, drifting through matches without showing any of that box-crashing instinct that made him look like an energetic leader during his old Chelsea days.

What you end up with is a team that somehow controls half the possession but sits near the very bottom of the division for line-breaking passes, progressive carries, creative metrics, and actual goals scored. If we think back to how quickly the technical staff abandoned the promise of prospects like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall after a bright opening day, the institutional panic becomes impossible to hide. It completely wrecks your confidence when looking at the weekly football odds for survival, forcing fans to wager on whether a manager can suddenly invent a functional tactical system out of mismatched pieces before the final whistle of the season blows. Sitting Xavi Simons on the bench for four consecutive games while the team struggles to scrape together more than thirteen goals since the turn of the year is the kind of stubborn managerial hubris that usually ends in an incredibly depressing trip down to the Championship.

A Hundred-Million-Pound Gamble on Tonali

Rumors linking Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali with a move down south feel like a massive shot of adrenaline into a fanbase currently suffocating on pessimistic speculation.

The 26-year-old Italian represents exactly the type of press-resistant, deep-lying playmaker who could anchor De Zerbi’s preferred system, assuming the club actually retains its top-flight status and convinces him that a project without European football is worth his time. Newcastle are reportedly holding out for a massive hundred-million-pound fee, a number that managed to instantly scare off Manchester United due to the combined weight of the transfer invoice and the player’s steep weekly wage demands.

Let’s be clear, Tonali’s camp dropping hints that they would welcome an offer from Spurs smells heavily like an old-fashioned agency tactic designed to force Arsenal or Manchester City into launching a definitive bidding war. St James’ Park has adopted a fiercely pragmatic approach to roster management after learning some incredibly painful lessons during the Alexander Isak saga, when the Swedish striker went on strike before forcing a record-breaking move to Liverpool on deadline day.

If the hierarchy actually pulls the trigger on this kind of expenditure, they are gambling on a player who has only put together two full seasons in England following a highly publicized gambling suspension that cost him nearly a year of his career. Newcastle stood by him during that entire self-inflicted exile, meaning any sudden exit to a domestic rival is going to be met with immense hostility from the Tyneside faithful who view the sudden change of heart as an act of rank ingratitude.
