A main event goes up at -250 and +200. Somebody in a forum thread converts the favourite to 71.4% and treats that as the market’s opinion. It is a reasonable thing to do and it is wrong, in a direction that quietly distorts every comparison you make afterwards.
The fix takes about thirty seconds and it changes how you read a fight card.
The two numbers do not add up
Convert both sides of that line and you get 71.4% for the favourite and 33.3% for the underdog. Add them together and you get 104.8%, which is not how probability works. The extra 4.8% is the bookmaker’s margin, built into both prices at once.
This is the vig, the juice, the hold, the overround. Whatever you call it, it means the posted numbers are not probabilities. They are probabilities plus a toll, and the toll is charged to both fighters.
Stripping it out is called devigging, or calculating no-vig odds. The simplest method scales both numbers down until they sum to 100:
Favorite: 71.4 ÷ 104.8 = 68.2%
Underdog: 33.3 ÷ 104.8 = 31.8%
So the market does not think the favourite wins 71.4% of the time. It thinks 68.2%. That three-point gap is the difference between what you are quoted and what the people setting the price actually believe.
Two lines of arithmetic is nothing. A twelve-fight card is twenty-four, plus totals and method markets if you want them, and that is the point at which everyone quietly stops bothering. Why this matters more in MMA than in most sports
Margins in the big American team sports have been squeezed hard by competition. A standard NFL spread at -110 on both sides carries roughly 4.5%. MMA rarely gets that tight, and the further down the card you go, the worse it gets. Prelim fights between fighters nobody has priced carefully can run considerably fatter.
Take a heavier line on an early-card bout, -400 and +280:
Raw implied: 80.0% and 26.3%, summing to 106.3%
After devigging: 75.2% and 24.8%
Nearly five percentage points of daylight on the favourite. If you are comparing the market’s view against your own read of a fight, using 80% instead of 75.2% will make you fade favourites you should not be fading. That error compounds across a twelve-fight card.
There is a structural reason MMA is a good sport to do this in, too. Most fights are two-way markets with no draw to model, so the arithmetic is clean. Three-way markets in football need more care.
Break-even and belief are different numbers
Here is the part that trips people up, and it is worth being precise about.
The devigged number tells you what the market believes. The raw number tells you what you need to be right about to make money. Both are useful, for different questions.
At -400, you break even if the favourite wins 80% of the time. That is the bar for profit, and devigging does not lower it. What devigging tells you is that the market itself only rates that fighter at 75.2%, and you are being asked to pay the difference for the privilege of betting.
So when you are asking “does my read differ from the market’s,” compare against 75.2%. When you are asking “would this bet actually make money,” compare against 80%. Confusing the two is how people talk themselves into bets that were never priced in their favour.
Where a rankings model earns its keep
This is where devigging stops being trivia. Once both sides are on the same scale, you can put a market price and a model estimate side by side and the comparison means something.
If a rating system, an Elo-style method, or a straightforward record-and-competition-quality read puts a fighter around 70% and the devigged market number is 68.2%, you and the market are looking at the same fight the same way. There is nothing to act on and that is genuinely useful information.
The interesting cases are the wide ones. When a model says 62% and the market’s fair number says 74%, one of you is missing something. Usually it is the model, because the market has late information about camps, weight cuts and injuries that no rating system sees. Sometimes it is the market, especially on short-notice replacements and fighters whose records were built against soft competition. Knowing which situation you are in is most of the skill.
The practical habit is to run the fair numbers first and only then look at your own estimate, rather than the other way round. Reading the market after you have committed to a view is how you end up finding reasons to agree with yourself.
A note on method
The proportional approach above is the standard one and it is fine for most purposes. It is not the only one. Power and Shin methods distribute the margin unevenly, on the theory that bookmakers load more of it onto underdogs than favourites.
That theory has support. Longshots across many sports return worse than their prices suggest, and MMA is not obviously exempt. On lopsided lines the different methods can disagree by a point or two on the underdog, which matters if you are betting large dogs regularly. On a -150 versus +130 main event, they will land in more or less the same place. Start with the simple method, and worry about the alternatives when you are consistently playing heavy underdogs.
What to do with it
Devig against the sharpest price you can find rather than the softest. A market that takes serious money and moves for real reasons produces a more meaningful fair number than one copying its lines from elsewhere.
Then keep the habit small. Two numbers per fight, one comparison against your own read, and a note of where the gap was wide. Over a year that record tells you something no single card can: whether your read on fights is adding anything to what the market already knew.
