Q&A
FightMatrix: Can you tell us about your upbringing and early life in Germany?
Ralph-Peter Frohn-Lux: I grew up in Wuppertal with two younger siblings. From an early age, I tried many different sports and became very successful in swimming, rowing, and kayaking, winning several championships.
FM: What is your current profession? Do you train or coach aspiring boxers?
RF: Since 2007 I have been an entrepreneur in the field of forklifts, spare parts, and software. About two years ago, I also brought my passion for boxing into my professional life. Today I am not only active in Master Boxing myself and share my experience in fitness and boxing training, but I also organize my own boxing events as a promoter – from Master Boxing to newcomers and professionals.
FM: You discovered boxing later in life. Were you active in other sports during your youth?
RF: In my youth I was already very active in sports and won several championships in swimming, rowing, and kayaking. However, I came to boxing much later – more by chance. At a time when I had somewhat lost my direction and weighed as much as 128 kilos, I changed my lifestyle and discovered fitness boxing. From then on, I fell in love with the sport.
FM: What inspired you to start boxing, and how did you begin?
RF: I was inspired by the power of a fresh start. After a period in my life when I weighed over 128 kilos, I was looking for a sport that would challenge not only my body but also my mind. By chance, I found myself in a boxing gym. Already after the first sessions, I felt how boxing changed me – more discipline, more energy, and new goals in life. What began as fitness boxing quickly grew into a true passion that continues to drive me today.
FM: How long do you plan to continue competing in Master Boxing?
RF: As long as my health allows, I want to stay active. At the moment, I am doing a lot of pioneering work for Master Boxing in Germany and I see that some former successful boxers are also becoming interested. Of course, they bring a different level of experience, but I keep going, training almost daily under professional conditions. Maybe I can still pull off one or two surprises. My next big goal is a title fight in South Africa this November.
FM: What drives your passion and motivation to keep fighting?
RF: I am driven by the joy of challenge and the will to show that age does not have to be a limit. Boxing gives me strength, discipline, and energy – qualities that I also use outside the ring. At the same time, I want to be a role model and inspire others to pursue their own goals, no matter what stage of life they are in.
FM: Looking back at your first Master Boxing title – what thoughts and emotions did you experience at that time?
RF: My first significant title came in 2024 in Las Vegas. I can hardly remember many details because I was so nervous. But it was a fantastic event in an incredible city. What impressed me most was the appreciation Master Boxing received there.
FM: In your opinion – who is the greatest professional boxer of all time, and what makes him special?
RF: Of course, I can only speak for myself. I have always been a big fan of Roy Jones Jr. – I found his fights fantastic. A very special moment for me was when I had the opportunity to do an exhibition sparring session with him. He is an impressive personality, without any star attitude – very authentic and approachable. From a German perspective, Felix Sturm and Firat Arslan have always inspired me. That is why it is a great honor and a true privilege for me to train at the gym of Felix Sturm and Roland Bebak today – certainly also a recognition of what I am currently contributing to the sport of boxing.
FM: Who are some of your current favorite boxers in today’s boxing scene?
RF: At the moment, I find Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev outstanding. Both represent technique, strength, and absolute professionalism.
FM: How often do you train, and what does your typical training schedule look like?
RF: I train at least five times a week for one to two hours. In the past, I focused heavily on strength and athleticism. Currently, I am fortunate to work with Frank Lubitz – a very experienced coach who specifically addresses my technical weaknesses. This work is taking me to a completely new level.
FM: What would you like your fans and our audience to know about you outside the ring?
RF: First of all, I have to say that of course there are many skeptics – at least in Germany. In the USA, Australia, or England, Master Boxing receives a completely different appreciation. The most common question I get is how I can still achieve such performances at my age. My answer is always clear: discipline. Discipline should not be confused with motivation – it is the true foundation of success.
