Fighters with the Most Wins in UFC History

Posted on December 24, 2020 by A. J. Riot

It sounds odd, but not nearly enough time is devoted to talking about the UFC greats. Everything seems rooted in the here and now, with an heavier emphasis on future fights, while everything that’s already happened falls by the wayside, except for brief mentions when discussing someone’s resume.

There’s no clear-cut explanation for this phenomenon. Part of it is definitely because the UFC is still in its infancy relative to other sports leagues. It didn’t start until 1993, and it has only really become ultra-popular since the turn of the millennium. Another potential reason is the scarcity of matchups. Fighters are scheduling bouts every other week, so even the longest-tenured UFC participants have a finite sample size under their belts.

And finally, let’s not neglect the financial aspect: Everyone cares about the upcoming fight most because that’s the one they can order on pay-per-view and place wagers on. Only a handful of sports in North America are more popular when it comes to that, and it’s become an incredibly lucrative industry. Why, sports betting in California alone is projected to be worth $2.5 billion per year. And that’s just one state. People love to wager on sports that don’t take place every day. That’s why, like college football and the NFL, the UFC takes center stage when it comes to looking at upcoming events rather than past ones. It also helps that virtually every new fight is either a title fight or a bout that will determine who gets the next shot at a title matchup.

Make no mistake, though, the UFC has officially been around long enough that it’s put together a colorful history. Plenty of those who have set foot in the octagon are worthy of being considered among the sport’s all-time greats. And while there’s no one way to identify them, it makes sense to start with the fighters who have racked up the most victories in UFC history.

Donald Cerrone (23 victories)

“Vice Chairman USO Tour” by The USO is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

Let’s just say the 37-year-old Donald Cerrone, who was formerly a professional kickboxer, has been around the UFC for quite some time. And he has the resume to prove it.

Not only does he hold the all-time record for victories, but he has also fought in more bouts (35) and owns more finishes (16) than anyone else. And guess what? He’s not done yet. His last fight came in September 2020, and he very much plans to keep going.

UFC 256 Proves that MMA is Changing as Old Warriors Make Way for Rising Stars

Posted on December 15, 2020 by A. J. Riot

As MMA’s old guard lay down their shields and move on to new pastures, the UFC looks set to go through a transitionary period in the coming years. Indeed, with established stars fading, there’s room in the spotlight for emerging talent. Evidence that this is the case came courtesy of UFC 256. In the wake of Yoel Romero’s surprise departure from the organization, three battle-worn warriors showed their scars on December 12 at the Apex in Las Vegas.

The record-setting career of Jay Ellis

Posted on December 8, 2020 by Richard Mann

Kevin Costner’s character in “Bull Durham,” a career minor league baseball player, refers to the minor-league home-run record as “kind of a dubious honor.” It is hard to imagine an MMA equivalent of that record, but there is clearly one even more infamous. 36-year-old Jay Ellis already holds this record, and his lead in this particular metric extended this past weekend.

On Saturday former Appalachian State All-American wrestler Austin Trotman picked up his first professional win. That victory came at the expense of Ellis. In the process, Trotman handed Ellis his record 94th MMA loss. Per Fight Matrix tracking that is the most losses in the history of the sport and six more than Shannon Ritch who has the second most losses.

Ellis made his MMA debut back in 2005, and he currently holds a 15-94 professional record. While that is a 14% winning percentage, he does have some wins over some names that will be familiar to MMA fans.

In 2007, Ellis brought a 3-7 record into a fight against current UFC competitor Gerald Meerschaert. It was only Meerschaert’s second professional fight, and Ellis’ experience edge paid off. Six years later Meerschaert would get a taste of revenge as he won a rematch and handed Ellis his 54th loss.

Ellis was also the debut opponent for former Bellator featherweight champion Daniel Straus. Despite having a 9-28 record heading into the fight, Ellis was able to pick up the victory back in 2009. Straus was able to put the pieces back together and won his first of two Bellator titles in 2013.

The last time Ellis tasted victory came back in 2017, and he is currently riding a 21-fight losing streak. At the moment it looks like he will be remembered for this somewhat odd record. Ellis will have a hard time claiming any other record. He is currently ninth on the list of fighters with the most professional MMA bouts, and it seems very unlikely he will catch the current leader as Travis Fulton has fought 322 times.

Poirier vs. McGregor 2: Does the Advantage Now Lie with The Diamond?

Posted on December 7, 2020 by A. J. Riot

On January 23rd, 2021, Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will meet in the cage for the second time in their professional careers. At the main event of UFC 257, the lightweight contenders will battle for superiority on their paths back to a 155-pound title shot. Having won the first fight between the pair at UFC 178, many believe that the Notorious is the favorite to triumph in their upcoming highly-anticipated bout. However, few can argue that The Diamond hasn’t learned from his defeat to the Irishman back in September 2014. So, let’s consider whether Poirier is being overlooked ahead of UFC 257.

Poirier’s Record Showcases Undeniable Improvements

Following his loss to McGregor as a featherweight, the five-foot-nine American has reinvented himself as a lightweight. After being stopped by the Irishman in the first round of their initial match-up, Poirier has only lost twice since then. At UFC Fight Night: Poirier vs. Johnson in September 2016, Michael Johnson knocked out The Diamond, before the Louisiana-born fighter suffered a third-round submission loss at the hands of Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242, as per his official fight record.

Although he’s yet to get his hands on the lightweight belt, the former 155-pound interim champion has got several notable wins over elite competitors. To date, Poirier has beaten Anthony Pettis and Eddie Alvarez, who previously held the division’s title, as well as Dan Hooker, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway.
