What next for Billy Joe Saunders after Defeat to Canelo Alvarez?

Posted on May 19, 2021 by A. J. Riot

It was hard to tell how much damage Billy Joe Saunders had after Canelo Alvarez had unleashed an extremely powerful uppercut to the Englishman’s right eye during their middleweight unification fight. Over 73,000 spectators in the AT&T Stadium in Texas, many in the arena believed that a significant blow had indeed been landed.

All It Takes Is One Punch

It was only after both fighters came out of their clinch that the worst-case scenario for Saunders had been confirmed. The 30-year-old’s eye closed up within seconds and his cheek appeared to be slightly caved in. Admirably, that didn’t stop Saunders from finishing the rest of the round before heading back to his corner to tell his trainer Mark Tibbs that he could no longer see. Team Saunders was left with no other option than to inform the referee that the Englishman was unable to continue. Jubilant scenes then followed in the ring as Alvarez was awarded the WBO super middleweight title by way of TKO. Meanwhile, Saunders was immediately transported to a local hospital in Dallas for emergency surgery as this post-fight report from talksport.com officially confirms.

It was a harsh end for Saunders, but he knows as much as anyone how tough this division can be. That’s not to say that the 30-year-old was ahead in the bout, all three judges had Alvarez winning the fight at the time of the stoppage, but he was boxing intelligently and avoiding most of the Mexican’s power shots.

Is Conor McGregor Past it?

Posted on May 17, 2021 by A. J. Riot

There was a time when Conor McGregor was arguably the pound-for-pound best fighter in the UFC. He seemed to have everything needed to succeed – speed, power and enough grappling ability to get by. He backed all of this up with one of the biggest mouths in the entire industry.

McGregor’s record is still extremely good with just five losses in his career and only three of those coming in the UFC. However, since losing to Khabib, he does seem to have lost a step. Is he a shadow of his former self, or can he come through this tough time to take his seat at the top of the mountain again?

Eye of the Tiger

Many feel that Conor McGregor hasn’t lost his ability, but he’s just lost his hunger. Success came to him, not just in the octagon but financially as well, and it has gone to his head. Once money came his way, he was more likely to be seen in the casino than in the gym. It meant that, ironically, people who would have backed him with their bets turned their backs. By visiting casinos instead of gyms, McGregor showed that his heart wasn’t in fighting how it used to be. He had managed to fight his way out of poverty. He didn’t need to do it anymore.

While it would be unfair to claim Khabib didn’t deserve his win against McGregor, it would also be unfair to suggest that it was Conor’s best showing either. We still feel that Khabib would have won if McGregor was at his best. At the same time, it’s unlikely that McGregor would have been demolished and quite frankly embarrassed in the way that he was if he had trained properly. Once you lose the eye of the tiger, it’s hard to get it back. If McGregor loses the trilogy rematch against Poirier, then there’s a good chance that it’s gone for good.

The Curious Case of Ranking Anthony Johnson

Posted on May 10, 2021 by Jason

Rarely has a case of determining a fighter’s ranking been as interesting as Anthony Johnson, who recently came back after a 4+ year layoff.

Why?  Two main reasons.

  1. Lost his most recent fight prior to his comeback, albeit in a UFC championship match.
  2. Dominantly won his comeback fight (after almost getting finished himself) in Bellator, but against an unheralded opponent.

Prior to his comeback, Anthony Johnson was ranked as the #3 LHW here, with 1,225 points. Currently, he sits at #23, with only 192 points.  Some of these lost points remain in a “holding pen” so to speak — with the opportunity for Johnson to earn them back if he proves himself against a worthy opponent, soon.

#3 loses to #1.  Takes 4+ years off, returns to beat #82.  It’s probably safe to say that he’s somewhere between #3 and #82, but exactly where?

Other Sources

  • Tapology – Fan-vote driven, they rank Johnson at #23.  Hey, sound familiar?
  • Ranking MMA – #4.  Seems foolish, or entirely driven by one of the popular mathematical ranking systems.  We’ll get to that in a moment.

Fight Matrix Alternate Systems

  • WHR – #1 and pretty comfortably.  WHR does not punish for inactivity, but the decay of recent opponents can negatively affect a fighter’s rating.  However, Johnson hasn’t had any recent opponents prior to his comeback.
  • Glicko – #4.  Inactivity can cause a fighter’s rating to fluctuate more upon return, but Johnson’s inactivity extends way beyond the maximum fluctuation potential.. and he won on his comeback.
  • Elo – #3 (both).  Elo, the most simplistic system performs better than WHR, the most complicated.  I think Glicko gets this one the most correct.

Who’s Right?

Ranking fighters that return from inactivity is probably best left to the humans.  If Johnson was 41 instead of 37, I’d be tempted to rank him lower, regardless of how his recent fight went, but that’s largely irrelevant, or is it?  Seeing Johnson almost get finished himself, also makes me want to rank him lower, but he ended up winning.  Ultimately, I think a ranking in the #20 area is a fair position.  What do you think?

UFC Odds 2021: Spreads and Betting Lines

Posted on May 10, 2021 by A. J. Riot

Wagering on the UFC during the coronavirus pandemic has increased to the point of it becoming a betting alternative. It’s an entertaining sport that attracts fans from all over the world. Now that means more and better UFC betting information, our latest odds, and additional offers will be available. See the latest odds in FanDuel.

How To Read UFC Odds

Knowing how to read and understand UFC odds is important before betting on UFC fights, and it’s also fairly simple once you’ve seen them in action. In sports betting, the favorite is the lower of the two figures, and the underdog is typically the higher of the two. They serve the same purpose in fractional and decimal forms.

How Do UFC Odds Work

The most straightforward UFC wager is to choose the fighter you believe would win. When you go to your sportsbook’s UFC odds page, you’ll see two fighters paired up against each other.

When you choose the fighter you believe will win the fight, it will appear in your betting slip to the right of the page. You will put in the amount of money you want to bet on him or her to see how much your wager will payout.

You can cash in your bet if your fighter wins the fight. You can also wager on various aspects of the fight, but the most common type of UFC betting is simply picking one of the two fighters to win.
