The flyweight, or 115 lbs, is the lightest men’s division in today’s UFC and the second lightest in MMA overall. It is also the newest men’s weight class in the UFC, and historically, flyweights have not received a lot of love from MMA fans. And that’s too bad, because the pace these guys can put up and consistently keep is not matched by any other division.
Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson has ruled the flyweight throne for many years, showcasing slick submission grappling, quick striking, smooth transitions and an endless gas tank. He eventually found his match when he lost a close decision to Henry Cejudo. After Cejudo’s untimely retirement, it looked like Deiveson Figueredo might be the next big thing at 115, until he was dominated and stopped by Brandon Moreno. I can’t think of a better fighter than Moreno to build some excitement for the still-fledgling division.
