The second-to-lightest men’s division in the UFC is contested at 135 lbs, and bantamweight fights didn’t always take place in an Octagon. Similarly to featherweights, bantamweight division was once cultivated by WEC, which was purchased by UFC in 2010 and the lighter weight classes were brought under UFC’s banner.
Miguel Torres was one of the bantamweight standouts back in the WEC days, and Dominick Cruz swapped the WEC gold for the UFC hardware. However this division has been somewhat cursed for it’s champions: Torres has fell off very quickly at a relatively young age; Cruz’s career was plagued by injuries and long periods of inactivity; Renan Barao saw a fate similar to Torres; while TJ Dillashaw faced a long doping suspension. Presently, champion Aljamain Sterling is slated to rematch Petr Yan for the UFC gold; Sterling won the title in their first matchup by disqualification.
