But you were right about Maeda.
No, Takaya was 0-2 in the WEC. He lost to Leonard Garcia and Cub Swanson. As for the Omigawa fight, it was close and could have went either way.
@TholonansGhost
Takaya is 0-1, and to be fair Omigawa’s last fight was a total robbery. Also Maeda was never ranked in the Top 10 on Sherdog and was only ranked in the Top 10 in Fight Matrix after knocking out Charlie Valencia, which was fairly appropriate at the time.
I’ll agree Japanese fighters have historically underperformed in the UFC, that much is obvious.
[...] [#30] Micah Miller [...]
1-2 Maeda
3-4 Mizugaki
0-2 Takaya
0-2 Omigawa
1-3 Akiyama
0-1 Sakurai
1-2 Kondo
3-5-2 Uno
All of these guys were generally considered top ten in their divisions when they came to the UFC or WEC and they had a total record of 9-21-2 with UFC/WEC.
Tom, here’s a few names for you…
Yoshiro Maeda, Takeya Mizugaki, Hiroyuki Takaya,
Yoshihiro Akiyama and Michihiro Omigawa were all top ten when they came to Zuffa, and they’ve all flopped.
And let’s not forget Yuki Kondo, Hayato Sakurai and Caol Uno as three more overrated, underachieving japanese fighters.
Actually, Yushin Okami is the only Japanese fighter to ever have much success with Zuffa.
Asian fighters are underrated on this site, not overrated. Hioki should be #2. So there’s going to be a special “asia modifier” where beating an asian opponent garners less points? LOL
Don’t forget all the asian fighters who got ROBBED when they come to the US.
Can you give some examples? Most of those fighters were NOT highly ranked by the time they came over
” Also, look at all of these japanese fighters with pretty records and high rankings who come to the USA and get totally outclassed (often by lower ranked fighters).”
