What’s More and Less Likely to Happen Than McGregor Beating Mayweather?

Aug 14, 2017
A. J. Riot

For many a boxing expert the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor is a joke. McGregor has never had a professional boxing fight in his life and yet he is challenging arguably the greatest of all time in the sport. As of today the Notorious Irishman is 4/1 to win the bout for anyone interested in placing a bet on the Mayweather v McGregor fight.  This article looks at events that bookmakers believe are more and less likely to happen than a big upset in Las Vegas this month.

Alien existence to be proven in 2017 is    3/1

The bookmakers believe there is more chance we’ll see alien existence proven before the end of 2017 than Conor McGregor winning the fight of the year! This just shows the mammoth task that stands in front of the UFC Lightweight champion, and whether it is possible remains to be seen. McGregor has some guts going into the ring with arguably the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all time with no professional boxing experience under his own belt.  It will take an out of this world performance from McGregor to walk out victorious.

Winning an Olympic Gold medal is     662,000/1

When watching the Olympic Games many people may feel that they could do the same if they put the time in. However what goes into winning a Gold medal comes from day in, day out hard work and dedication for a lifetime. Mathematically it is 662,000/1 for someone to win an Olympic Gold medal. It is clear there is a higher probability of a McGregor first round knockout than you or I picking up Gold at the next Olympics.

Winning an Oscar is     11,500/1

It took arguably the greatest actor of the modern era a staggering 25 years to finally win that elusive Oscar. That person being Leonardo DiCaprio, which clearly shows it is far from an easy feat to achieve. To the average person the chances of achieving this is 11,500/1 and therefore the bookmakers favor McGregor having his hand raised at the end of the fight than you or I receiving an Oscar award.

Being attacked by a shark is     11.5 million/1

For many people this is up there with their most-feared nightmare of all, but actually, being attacked by a shark is a rare occurrence. This not only comes down to the fact many people will not even enter shark-inhabited waters but also in many cases sharks do not attack humans. Chance would increase if you live in places such as Australia.

In 2016 there were 107 shark attacks across the world with 8 fatalities… scary stuff!

Getting a royal flush in a first hand of poker is     649,740/1

The elusive royal flush is a dream to every poker player and to achieve it just once in their playing career is a feat in itself. However, getting one in your first hand of poker would be incredible luck, albeit very highly unlikely to happen. Not many have occurred over the years but one was seen at the World Series of Poker back in 2007. I think there is more chance of seeing Mayweather knocked out in Vegas than a Royal Flush at in your first hand at a casino.

Jeremy Corbyn to be the next prime minister after Theresa May is     4/1

If you asked Jeremy Corbyn himself he would probably say it’s almost certainly odds on, however, the Labour leader is 4/1 to be Britain’s next Prime Minister. Corbyn claims he has changed Politics the same as McGregor feels he has changed the fighting game. Whether either can cause an upset remains to be seen…
